Horse Racing Tips: Timeform’s best bets at Newbury on Saturday

13:30 – Hurrican Lane

HURRICANE LANE was a long way below his best in two starts last season, but the ground was probably faster than ideal and this looks a good opportunity for him to bounce back now faced with more suitable conditions on his belated return to action. A high-class three-year-old in 2021 with wins in the Irish Derby and St Leger, he is certainly the class act in this line-up and the fact his connections are persevering with him as a five-year-old suggests he’s been showing the right signs at home.

14:05 – Magical Sunset

MAGICAL SUNSET took a big step forward when last seen winning a listed race over this course and distance in October, clearly relishing the testing conditions as she drew clear to win by five lengths with a bit in hand. She is one of the standouts in this field on two-year-old form and the fact she is proven with cut in the ground is a big plus. Trained by Richard Hannon, who won Wednesday’s Nell Gwyn Stakes with Mammas Girl, Magical Sunset looks another smart filly in the making and should take plenty of beating in this Group 3.

14:40 – Chaldean

CHALDEAN improved with every start last season and his final victory in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October identified him as one of the best two-year-olds around. The official winning margin was just a head, but there was plenty to like about the way he completed the task, making all and typically showing a willing attitude when tackled late on. Already among the ante-post favourites for the 2000 Guineas, he comfortably sets the standard in this line-up and is fancied to tee himself up for a big run at Newmarket with a fifth career win.

15:15 – Lattam

LATTAM was value for a good deal extra when making a successful reappearance in the Irish Lincolnshire at the Curragh last month, meeting trouble late on but staying on strongly once in the clear to get the verdict by a short head. It was a remarkable performance all things considered and there should be more handicaps to be won with him from a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) mark of 92. Still relatively unexposed after just five starts, he probably hasn’t reached his ceiling yet and it’s not out of the question that he could be running in Group races sooner rather than later.

15:50 – Greatest Time

GREATEST TIME made a very promising start to his career when filling the runner-up spot at Newmarket in September, sticking to his task well to be beaten just half a length. He fared best of the newcomers in that race and the winner, Kolsai, has since shown borderline smart form when finishing a good second in the listed Feilden Stakes back at Newmarket on Wednesday. There doesn’t appear to be anything of that calibre in opposition here and, with further progress on the cards, Greatest Time rates a solid selection to get off the mark at the second attempt.

16:20 – Astrodome

ASTRODOME shaped with plenty of promise when finishing third on his debut at Doncaster a few weeks ago, keeping on well under a hands-and-heels ride to pass the post six lengths behind the winner. That run in very testing conditions is likely to bring him on and the application of cheekpieces today could also eke out further progress. By Sea The Stars and out of the classy So Mi Dar, Astrodome is certainly bred to do better, so he gets the vote to open his account in what doesn’t look the strongest maiden for the track.

16:55 – Saturn Five

SATURN FIVE achieved a fairly useful level of form in three starts for Joseph O’Brien in 2022, producing his best effort when winning a maiden at Punchestown in September. He has since joined Charlie Fellowes having been bought for 62,000 guineas in October and a BHA mark of 85 looks a good starting point to life on these shores. After all, there should be more to come from him this season given his lightly raced profile and the rain-softened ground here won’t be an issue, either.
