13:15 – Ayr – Frere Darmes
ITV Saturday mixes top jumps and Flat action starting with a handicap chase over an extended 2m. FRERE D’ARMES failed to do what was expected at Ascot last time but can make up for that here. This is a slightly shorter trip than he last defeat and that’s key as he emptied quickly on that run. He stays on the same mark of 136 and should have every chance for Dan Skelton and jockey Bridget Andrews.
13:30 – Newbury – Hurricane Lane
ITV also go to Newbury for Flat racing action on Saturday and get underway with the Group 3 John Porter over 1m 4f. Growing up this was one of may favourite races because you used to get a proper middle distance star in it. That’s not been the case recently, but a class act is back here in the former St Leger hero and Arc third HURRICANE LANE. He was relatively hopeless last season, when conditions were never in his favour. However, they should be perfect here and it will be really disappointing if he doesn’t outclass this lot for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. He takes on Mojo Star once again who was a well-held second in his Leger success.
13:50 – Ayr – Ned Tanner
Up in class for the Grade 2 Scottish Champion Hurdle which is a limited handicap. NED TANNER is in great form and might appreciate going up in trip for Nick Alexander and Sean Quinlan. He kept on well enough in defeat at Haydock last time and is a young horse still improving. A racing weight of 10st 6lb looks perfect.
14:05 – Newbury – Remarquee
Another Group 3 in the Fred Darling 1000 Guineas trial over 7f. I’m not sure about Swingalong at the trip, so I’m siding with REMARQUEE each-way for Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby. From a family the trainer knows well, my hope was game and looked promising when scoring on debut at Salisbury and should have much more to come this term. Whether she’s ready for this test only time will tell, but I’m sure she’s black-type material.
14:25 – Ayr – Milkwood (each-way)
Up in class for the Grade 2 Scottish Champion over 2m. MILKWOOD has run well in this race before and he is now a dangerously well handicapped runner. There was not much hope on his last start, but I suspect he would’ve been laid out for this by connections. So risk a few quid each-way. Hopefully Sam Twiston-Davies gets a good tune out of him for Neil Mullholland.

14:40 – Newbury – Chaldean
The Group 3 Greenham Stakes, a 2000 Guineas trial over 7f. It’s impossible to oppose Dewhurst hero CHALDEAN who is back here for Andrew Balding and Frankie Dettori. The son of Frankel just got better and better last term and is reported to have done well over the winter. If you fancy him to hack up here then have a few quid on for the 2,000 Guineas before this event. If he wins well he will only shorten in the market.
15:00 – Ayr – Datsalrightgino
Another Grade 2 here in a novices’ chase over an extended 2m4f. DATSALRIGHTGINO was never going in the soft conditions at Cheltenham last time when pulled up in the Magners Plate. However, the surface will be much more to his liking here and he should put that behind him for Gavin Sheehan and Jamie Snowden. Prior to the Festival flop he was in fine shape behind Solo and Stage Star. This trip is perfect.
15:15 – Newbury – Lattam
A cracking betting heat in the Spring Cup Handicap over 1m. LATTAM absolutely bolted up in the Irish Lincoln for William Haggas and off just a 5lb higher mark I see no reason why he won’t do so again under Tom Marquand. Ground conditions look ideal and as a lightly raced type there should be much more improvement. He stays well having been tried at further already and just needs a strong gallop to run at which he should get. He’s hard to oppose.
15:35 – Ayr – Mighty Thunder
The big betting race of the day in the Scottish Grand National over 4m. If former winner MIGHTY THUNDER is ever going to come back to form then this is the moment. Rather oddly, he’s been pumped up 1lb for finishing a distant fifth at Kelso last time, so the handicapper has seen something. There have been glimmers of hope recently, notably in the Eider behind Kitty’s Light (our NAP in that race). A mark of 128 is 16lb lower than when he landed this prize back in 2021. At the age of 10 he should not be over the hill and I’ll take a chance on the National heroes in Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore, who of course also have the much better fancied Your Own Story in the event.
So best of luck and hope for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
