Several of this 14 runner field have been plying their trade in better class races and this drop in grade will help a handful of them become more competitive here. My first port of call was Restitution who was hugely impressive to the eye when winning over the bare two miles at Doncaster on good ground. On breeding there is no reason why he shouldn’t get home over the extra five furlongs here, but if they get some heavy showers that could go some way to scuppering his chance.
The selection hasn’t looked straightforward this season, but I know that Nicky Henderson thought that the seven-year-old would have won a nice handicap prize by now, hence he ran him in a couple of class two events at Huntingdon (seemingly just had an off day) and then when a fine second to Outlaw Peter at Kempton Park last month.
The selection actually runs off a 1lb lower mark (124) here and this looks a fine chance for the son of Yeats to record a second hurdles success on his eighth start at the discipline.

This class four staying handicap hurdle looks very competitive for the level and could take some winning with some still unexposed young stayers set to line up. But the one I think is still hiding his full potential under a bushel is the Jonjo O’Neill trained entry.
The six-year-old has been campaigned up to two miles and five furlongs in his career and on several occasions has been badly outpaced when the speed has lifted only to stay on too late in the day when the prize has been all but decided. By Fame and Glory out of an Overbury mare, he should have little trouble with the extra yardage here, in fact he should relish it, and there is little doubt that he remains capable of leaving his current rating of 118 well behind when his stamina is fully excavated.
Go and have a look at his run at Exeter last time out when he looked like being badly outpaced and probably pulled up at halfway on the good ground that day. But under the minimum of pressure he stayed on in eye catching fashion that day and I wouldn’t be surprised if he were a springer in the market here especially if we get a tidy sum of rain.

The cheek pieces may well enable Jaytee to find that little bit extra to go close under a rating of 112 here with William Kennedy on board and this certainly seems like a viable opportunity for him, while O’Faolains Lad comes here fresher than most at the back end of the season and is very fairly treated on some of his old form, though he does have to show he retains that ability after being off the track for a very long time.
However, I have been following the selection for some time now hoping that connections would put him in the right race and that time has come here. An above average bumper horse and novice hurdler, he has been campaigned over a range of distances since running over fences, from forcing the pace over two and two and a half and playing a waiting game up to three and a quarter miles.
Perhaps two of his best recent runs though have come here over the course and distance when a blunder five out put paid to his chance in the Dick Hunt Trophy of 2022, off a rating of 120, and then two outings back when he was nine lengths off My Silver Lining after getting outpaced midway down the far side before staying on well late on. Set to race off a joint career low mark of 107 here, the nine-year-old has outstanding prospects here granted a clear round.
4.35pm Tramore – Brideswell Lad
Course and distance and multiple winner Tyre Kicker will need a career best to continue his red hit run, but that is certainly not out of the question in a race which I don’t think will take an awful lot of winning. I thought that Old Soul was slightly flattered by his win last time out and also needs to find something extra here, so in the end I plumped for the Seamus Neville trained top weight.
Winner of two of his eight starts over fences, the bay gelding served notice that his turn was just around the corner when keeping on nicely at the finish over two and a half miles at Wexford on the last day of March. That afternoon, he was badly hampered by a faller at the third last losing crucial momentum and in the end did well to finish so close. I have also upgraded that run because of the ground which would have been deep enough.
The gelding has been dropped a pound to a mark of just 119 and he could be capable of giving the weight away to those two in form horses as well as the likely dark entry in the race, Sunnyvilla, who I am convinced remains a lot capable of better after also getting stuck in very deep going last time out and may well be worth a saver if the market works in his favour.
