It’s Grand National day and this is a huge date for the people of Liverpool. It’s also a huge day for one of the 40 jockeys who is going to be lucky enough to win the world’s greatest steeplechase.
13:45 – Jonbon
JONBON did not jump as well as he can when finishing second in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival. This looks very straightforward, especially if Banbridge is a non-runner. There’s rain on Friday and that will slow it down, which should be perfect for him.
14:25 – Party Business (each-way)
Ian Williams has not had a great season but there have been signs his horses are in good form now. PARTY BUSINESS was a winner at the track last year and is not much higher in the ratings – that has to give him a strong chance in this.
15:00 – Irish Point
IRISH POINT missed Cheltenham and that could be the key here as all of the houses ahead of this one in the market went to the Festival. This is a stayer and he finished a good second in the Lawlor’s of Naas Grade 1 novice hurdle over this trip and with rain around the ground should be perfect.
SIRE DU BERLAIS it around here as he showed when winning last year. He then got beaten at Punchestown but having been to Cheltenham and then Aintree, it was maybe a step too far. Had a great win in the Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham. This is a horse who can back it up here.
SHAKEM UPARRY an a blinder at the Cheltenham Festival, finishing a good third. Has form at this track when finishing third in the handicap over 2 miles last year. This step up in trip has not been a problem for him and I think in a race where a few of these have to race from out of the handicap, this horse is definitely one to have on side.
The National is a puzzle! I love Any Second Now, but I feel carrying that kind of weight just leaves him at the mercy of a lot of others in the race. For that reason he’s not my outright tip but I do think he will be in the shake up. I have gone for CORACH RAMBLER for the team that won the race with One For Arthur in 2017,He was so good at Cheltenham and if the handicapper had to allot him a rating now he would be racing off 10lbs higher. The only concern is if he gets too far behind the leaders, but he is a stronger horse this year and I think that will help him.
With Paddy Power paying six places each-way, my idea of the first over the line is:
