13:45 – Jonbon

Yeeehaaa! Grand National day on ITV and the action on course gets under way here with the Grade 1 EFT Systems Maghull Novices’ Chase over two miles. Very easy to think JONBON is an absolute good thing here for Nicky Henderson and Aidan Coleman. I’m surprised he hasn’t been stepped up in trip this week but the Arkle runner-up should be far too good for this lot even though he was well beaten by El Fabiolo at Cheltenham.

14:25 – Mill Green

A handicap hurdle here over an extended three miles. MILL GREEN really should have a great eachway chance for Nico de Boinville and Nicky Henderson. Up 1lb for his third behind re-opposing Good Time Jonny at Cheltenham, my hope should be better suited to this tighter track. He ran really well at this fixture last year and while he’s got nothing in hand on ratings he should give us a fabulous run.

15:00 – Springwell Bay

Back to Grade 1 company for the Turners Mersey Novices’ Hurdle over two and a half miles. Hermes Allen needs to bounce back so I’ll chance SPRINGWELL BAY for Jonjo O’Neill senior and junior. The six-year-old has always shown promise and come into this on the back of two decent victories at Ascot and Wetherby. He jumps well and stays so should be in the mix.

15:35 – Flooring Porter

Top class action again here with the Grade 1 JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle over an extended three miles. FLOORING PORTER really should get an uncontested lead and I’ll be surprised if anyone can pick him up under Danny Mullins for Gavin Cromwell. My selection ran a cracker at Cheltenham and while there will be some pace pressure from Dashel Drasher I expect him to see that rival off with ease.

16:15 – Nassalam

A handicap chase over three miles and a furlong. NASSALAM might have an eachway chance here for Gary Moore and son Jamie. He’s down 1lb to 143 after a decent enough effort at Cheltenham last time when 10th behind Corach Rambler. Prior to that he suggested this trip would be all right when third behind Midnight River at the same course. Lovely racing weight.

17:15 – Delta Work/Longhouse Poet/The Big Dog/Noble Yeats

Here’s the big one. The Randox Grand National Handicap Chase over four miles and an extended two furlongs. Time to give you my 1-2-3-4.

DELTA WORK: Third in 2022 behind Noble Yeats and now rated 1lb lower in 159. Similar type to Tiger Roll in being a Grade 1 horse who has come through the X-Country ranks. Gutsy and brilliant winner at Cheltenham last time. Has every chance under Keith Donoghue.

LONGHOUSE POET: I had him to do well last year and weakened into sixth behind Noble Yeats. Was back in great form last time at Down Royal and this year’s renewal might not be quite as good as 2022. Is on the same mark again of 155 and appeared to jump well over these fences. JJ Slevin rides for former hero Martin Brassil.

THE BIG DOG: Giant of a chaser who stays very well. Fell when last seen at Leopardstown in Grade 1 company but is usually a good jumper and is a Troytown winner in Ireland. Stiff handicap mark but he’s got an each-way chance if he enjoys the place and might just surprise a few people. Aidan Coleman rides for Peter Fahey.

NOBLE YEATS: Up 19lb from when landing the great prize last year as a 50-1 no-hoper. He’s since proved that was no fluke landing a Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase here and finishing a staying on strongly fourth behind Galopin des Champs in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It won’t be easy under 11st 11lb but if he likes the fences the second time around he’s got the class to get involved once again under Sean Bowen for Emmet Mullins.

18:20 – Esprit Du Potier

For those still going Aintree 2023 closes with this bumper over two miles and a furlong. ESPRIT DU POTIER has looked promising in two Ayr victories and while only time will tell if he’s good enough the grey is the big hope for me for Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox. Likes to be up with the pace and seems to stay well. Fingers crossed.

So best of luck and hope for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
