FAKIR DOUDARIES is extremely hard to oppose today in this field. Gave Cheltenham a miss this year so comes here fresh and a venue where he has raced three times winning twice and finishing second by a neck on the other start; he clearly relishes it round here. Has won in four from six over today’s trip previously and in three from five on today’s ground and is a five-time winner in this company. The one they all have to beat today.
16:05 – Aintree – Burrows Saint & Phoenix Way
1.5 points each-way
BURROWS SAINT is one of four for Willie Mullins today but the only I think will actually stay this trip. Finished 4th in the Grand National a few years back which shows a good likeness for the fences here which don’t suit many horses. That 4th place was off a 4lb higher mark so he’s well handicapped and if returning to any kind of form it’s difficult to see him outside the top 6.
PHOENIX WAY was a winner over this trip at Ascot but failed to build on that for the next five starts resulting in him dropping to a dangerous handicap mark now. Obviously that comes with risks attached but on this mark today and if able to produce anything like his best form then a top 6 finish at the current odds looks an absolute steal. Going well at Ascot last time out when getting tired at the last and eventually finishing 5th, dropped back in trip here is much more up his street.
16:40 – Aintree – Maximilian
1.5 points each-way
MAXIMILIAN looks a great bet for me today, beat Stay Away Fay fair and square at Doncaster last time out who then went on to win the Albert Bartlett which has given that win a very welcome boost of form. Didn’t go to Cheltenham so should be fresh and connections have targeted this race. Stay Away Fay is 4/1 in the market so looks decent value on Maximilian. Trainer tends to do well here and Brian Hughes will be desperate to make amends after looking a clear winner on Ahoy Senior yesterday.
