HIGHLIGHTER is bred to stay well – he’s by Australia and out of a mare who won over just shy of a mile and a half – so a steadily-run race over a mile and a quarter on his handicap debut at Doncaster ten days ago wouldn’t have suited. He wasn’t disgraced in fifth on that occasion but is entitled to do better over this longer trip.
DESERT GAMES failed to build on an encouraging debut effort when only fifth over this course and distance when last seen in September but he had excuses as he was caught wide and raced too keenly without cover. It is better to focus on the positives of his debut third at Wolverhampton where he kept on well in third, offering something to work on. This £210,000 yearling purchase has been gelded since his latest outing and remains with potential.
COQUELICOT, a six-time winner under National Hunt rules including twice at around three miles, should be well suited by this stiff test of stamina. She improved on her previous Flat efforts when landing a two-mile handicap at Nottingham last week, proving well suited by the thorough test an honest gallop on heavy ground provided. She looks well treated under a 4 lb penalty following that authoritative four-length success and the extra two furlongs here is expected to play to her strengths.
CLARENDON HOUSE showed smart form on a few occasions last season, including when runner-up on his reappearance at Goodwood when he was only beaten a head by the progressive Raasel with the pair pulling clear of the remainder. Clarendon House also signed off for the season with a good effort when chasing home Judicial in a conditions race at Beverley, emerging with plenty of credit having pressed the leader from early on. He returns from a fair-looking mark only 3 lb higher than when runner-up to Raasel on his last outing in a handicap, and he ought to give a good account.
AMY SANTIAGO was only sixth on her handicap debut at Kempton last month, but she was beaten less than two lengths and shaped better than the result would suggest having been held up in a race run at just a steady gallop. Amy Santiago looked to be starting out on a fair handicap mark based on her Southwell novice success in February and she remains with potential. She wears cheekpieces for the first time here.
LEGACY POWER, a 400,000 guineas purchase as a yearling, shaped with promise on his debut at Lingfield in February, doing well to finish runner-up given how green he was. He hung right on the turn for home and then went left when staying on well in the straight, but he should benefit from the experience and can take a step forward with that outing under his belt. The excellent form of the Andrew Balding yard is in his favour.
BARNEY’S BAY is on a long losing run of 24 that stretches back to May 2021 but he has been running well of late and found only one too good when runner-up in a seven-furlong handicap at Southwell 11 days ago. Cheekpieces replace blinkers in a bid to eke out a bit extra and Barney’s Bay ought to launch a bold bid from a fair mark.
