EXCEED didn’t show much in two starts on turf last year, but he has improved on the all-weather of late, running his best race to date when beaten a short head at Southwell on Tuesday. He was coming back hard at the winner in the closing stages that day, suggesting he’ll relish the extra emphasis on stamina he faces now, and looks the way to go from the same mark. Ma Famille chased home a next-time-out winner at Kempton in February and is feared on handicap debut, with Mintana and Captain Dandy also considered in a wide-open handicap.
ENRAGED won back-to-back handicaps over five furlongs at Carlisle and Beverley last summer and she resumed winning ways over the same distance at Newcastle in February. She improved in defeat when a close third back at that track last time and, breaking from a good draw and representing a yard in form, she is fancied to make another bold bid. The returning Sows, who is potentially well handicapped, Kensington Agent and Four Adday are just a trio of others to consider.
FAST FORWARD was a two-time winner on turf last season and has seemingly been working his way back to fitness in three recent starts on the all-weather. He caught the eye when hitting the frame at Wolverhampton last month, having a hopeless task from his position but staying on well in the closing stages without being given too much of a hard time. He is now back down to his last winning mark and a big run is expected back on turf. My Brother Mike, who is a course and distance winner, is feared most with his reappearance run behind him, ahead of the hat-trick seeking Meisterzinger.
GASTRONOMY is from a good family and showed plenty of ability when not beaten far in a useful novice event on debut at Newmarket last season but he hasn’t progressed as expected since. However, he still looked inexperienced on his return from seven months off over an extended mile at Wolverhampton a few weeks ago, not ideally placed but leaving the impression he has more to offer. He seems sure to relish this much longer trip now making his handicap debut and he remains a horse to be positive about given connections. Cabrakan enjoyed a good winter over hurdles for Milton Harris and is feared most back in this sphere.
The suggestion is SUPERSTAR DJ, who has fewer convictions than the majority of these and shaped quite well for a long way on his Southwell reappearance seven weeks ago. He remains on a good mark judged by that effort and should appreciate this loner trip. Daphne May is better than she showed last time and remains well treated on her best form so she’s a possible threat, while Latent Heat is another with plenty of handicapping scope if primed for this reappearance.
DOUBLE DOWN improved having been ridden closer to the pace when just edged out at Kempton four weeks ago, boxing on in the closing stages, leaving the impression a more strongly-run race would suit, and should go well up 2 lb and in a change of headgear. Eight Mile showed good speed stepped up to this trip when scoring at Lingfield last week and rates a big threat under a penalty, while Landlordtothestars should be in the mix if seeing out this longer distance.
WALEYFA opened her account in impressive fashion on her first outing for Allice Haynes at Lingfield 11 days ago, justifying good support and moving clear of her rivals in the closing stages in good style. She looks well treated under a 5 lb penalty on that effort back in handicap company, so the follow up is very much on the cards, likely at the main expense of Seattle King and Moon Over The Sea, who head the opposition.
