Irish Grand National trends and statistics for Fairyhouse 5.00 on Monday

Some handy hints for the Easter treat!

The Irish Grand National can be a bit of a lottery for Paddy Power punters, but a deep dive into the history books could provide some clues for this year’s renewal.

The marathon contest has thrown up some shock winners in recent years including including Dermot McLoughlin pair Freewheelin’ Dylan (150/1) in 2021 and Lord Lariat (40/1) in 2022.

As well as a huge number of runners in the 2023 Irish Grand National, there are 22 fences to navigate over 3m5f on Fairyhouse’s testing chase course on Monday at 5pm.

The latest Irish Grand National odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise key trends to note for the Easter treat can be found below.

IRISH GRAND NATIONAL TRENDS

AGE

You have to go all the way back to 1997 (Mudahim) for the last time a horse aged 11 or older won the Irish Grand National.

It is worth noting that six-year-old (two in the 21st Century) and 10-year-old winners (three in the 21st Century) are rare as well, so you will want to narrow down the field to horses aged between seven and nine.

BETTING

As previously mentioned, there have been some big-priced winners in recent years. Incredibly, 14 of the last 18 winners of the Irish Grand National have come from outside the top three in the betting so it might be wise to look further down Paddy Power’s odds list.

LAST TIME OUT

A flick through the form book highlights that five of the last 20 winners ran at Cheltenham last time out while another four previously raced at Leopardstown.

WEIGHT

One of the most famous trends in National Hunt racing, horses carrying 11st or more hardly ever win the Irish Grand National as just two (Commanche Court in 2000 and Our Duke in 2017) have achieved the feat in this century.

Royale Pagaille – the only British runner in the race – carries top weight of 11st 12lbs, while Espanito Bello (11st 3lbs), Busselton (11st 1lb) and I Am Maximus (11st 1lb) are the only other runners on the wrong side of this trend.

WINS

You can put a line through horses that are winless over the larger obstacles as 19 of the last 20 winners of the Irish Grand National had one to four wins over fences before landing the Fairyhouse feature.
