LIBERALIST looked like she would need the experience given her demeanour beforehand on her debut last year and that proved to be the case, though she stuck to her task well to finish a remote second, and she showed improved form without being given a hard time on her final start at Newmarket. She sets the standard of those with experience and is the type who will take another step forward this year. Anjo Bonita was consistent as a juvenile and gets the nod for the forecast spot.
GEMINI STAR made an encouraging start to her career in heavy ground at Haydock last year, knowing her job and showing enough to suggest she is up to winning races. This doesn’t look a strong race and with ground conditions unlikely to be a problem she looks the one to beat on her return to action. Stella Blue and Chattel Village look the likeliest dangers.
This looks decidedly trappy and the betting is likely to prove a good guide. Slight preference is for TEN BOB NOTE, who displayed only minor promise in a trio of novice events last term, but he now gets his first crack at handicaps, has been gelded in the off-season and could well take a step forward. Edwina Sheeran and Philos are others to consider, whilst market support for Spare Rib and Wadacre Inca would also look significant.
Another competitive handicap but it may pay to side with LOCKDOWN LASS, who has only managed to get her head in front on one occasion in 23 starts, but is potentially well treated back on turf after a short break. She ran well on her return last season and with her rider taking off 5 lb, it would be no surprise to see her go well. Martin’s Brig and Jackmeister Rudi are others to consider in a modest handicap.
DARBUCKS won back-to-back handicaps on turf at Carlisle and Wetherby up to a mile last season and he hasn’t been disgraced since returning from a break in two starts on the all-weather recently. The return to turf on ground which won’t be a problem seems sure to suit him and he makes most appeal having dropped back down to his last winning mark. Hoots Toots and Spartakos can also make their presence felt.
DEBYDINKS remains a maiden but has been kept busy on the all-weather over the winter and he bounced back to form when runner-up over this trip at Newcastle last month. He was always prominent that day, sent into the lead around two furlongs out and only collared close home by one coming from further back. That was just his second start with cheekpieces on and a similar performance should be good enough to see him get his head in front. Teresa Grace, Cheyenne Nation and Fortunate Star head up the dangers.
FEN TIGER really hit form last season, winning three of his last six starts, including a soft-ground course and distance handicap, and he was liberated by a switch to more forceful tactics when producing a career-best effort at Leicester on his final start. He was seen to good effect that day but he appeals as a horse who has even more to offer and he has a better profile than most on his return to action. Poster Child and Purple Ice should also go well.
TANTASTIC ran his best race for a while when hitting the frame in a stronger handicap than this at Doncaster on Sunday, moving into contention over a furlong out but leaving the impression he’d come on for the outing. He is turned out quickly in a race which represents a drop in grade and he may be worth chancing. Freedom Flyer and Astapor head the list of dangers.
