13:50 – Indication Call

A field of 18 unraced two-year-olds are set to go to post in the Brocklesby, the first race of the British Flat turf season, but one who makes some appeal on paper is Indication Call. Indication Call, a €42,000 yearling, has plenty of speed in his pedigree as he is by Nunthorpe runner-up Soldier’s Call and out of a mare closely related to Mill Reef winner Toocoolforschool. Trainer Karl Burke fared well with his juveniles last season and his Indication Call looks the one to side with here.

14:25 – Tropez Power

Tropez Power has fared well since joining John Quinn, winning two of his five starts for the yard and finishing placed on the other three outings. Tropez Power scored on his penultimate start at Southwell and then showed better form in defeat when runner-up at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago, impressing with how he went through that contest. He is able to run off a 1 lb lower mark than the one he competed from at Newcastle and he ought to give another good account.

15:00 – Commanche Falls

Commanche Falls has a good record when fresh – he has won first time out on three occasions and finished runner-up last year – and he is worth siding with on his return here. Commanche Falls enjoyed an excellent campaign in 2021, when his four victories included the Stewards’ Cup. He may have won only once last season, but he proved better than ever, winning the Stewards’ Cup again before finishing runner-up in a competitive handicap at York and in the Ayr Gold Cup. His form is just about the best on offer and he gets the vote on his return.

15:35 – Awaal

Awaal shaped with encouragement when third on his debut last season and he built on that promise to get off the mark at Lingfield, where he beat subsequent Britannia Stakes winner Thesis, and he then ran a cracker to get to within three-quarters of a length of the smart Phantom Flight at Haydock. Awaal wasn’t seen for another five months but he returned with a hugely impressive victory on his handicap debut at Redcar in October, making a mockery of an opening mark of 93 as he forged three and three-quarter lengths clear. That performance proved his effectiveness on testing ground and, still open to plenty of improvement, he can defy a 9 lb higher mark to bag this prestigious prize.

16:10 – Poker Face

Poker Face created an excellent impression during his first campaign last season, winning all three outings and doing so in the style of an exciting prospect. After winning novices at Pontefract and Newcastle, Poker Face made his handicap debut off a mark of 87 and showed that such a rating underestimated his ability. He stormed eight and a half lengths clear in that event and, while the drop back in trip from a mile and a quarter doesn’t look like a positive, he is well worth a crack at this Listed level. He remains open to further improvement after only three starts.

16:45 – Carlton

Carlton, a €350,000 purchase as a yearling, makes appeal on paper as he is by Frankel and out of the German Listed race winner Chantra who has already produced several winners, including a smart sort in Calyxa. Carlton is in excellent hands with John and Thady Gosden and will have the assistance of James Doyle in the saddle, so he is of interest on his debut.

17:20 – Ivy Avenue

Ivy Avenue didn’t show much over hurdles for Warren Greatrex last year, but she had some fair handicap form on the Flat for Jim Bolger and is on a potentially handy mark based on some of those efforts. She has won fresh before – she won a Cork handicap from a 6 lb higher mark on her return in 2021 – and has joined a trainer in Mick Appleby with a fine record of rejuvenating his recruits.

17:50 – Aone Ally

Aone Ally progressed when going handicapping during 2021, going close in a mile handicap at Ayr and then over this course and distance on his final start of the campaign. He missed all of last season but showed some promise when third at Carlisle on his hurdling debut in February and, entitled to strip fitter with that run under his belt, makes most appeal here. He is only 1 lb higher than when runner-up here on his last Flat outing in 2021 and, given his lightly-raced profile, he still has more to offer.
