22- ACCA CRACKER - NEW CAP 1024

So, you’ve sat in the Aviva Stadium on Monday night and declared yourself a member of the New United Front of Irish Football.

Which is lovely – welcome.

And yet, you’ve never stepped foot in a League of Ireland ground in your life. It’s time to engage with grassroots on a Friday night.

Gavin Bazunu was in nets for Shamrock Rovers. Seamus Coleman lined out for Sligo. Matt Doherty was a regular for Bohs. Chiedozie Ogbene starred for Limerick. Evan Ferguson started against Chelsea in Dalymount Park when he was fourteen.

It’s endless. You may as well familiarise yourself with your heroes before they even become your heroes.

Ironically, you can probably catch them for a pint before they’re launched into meal plans and yoga across the water.

We’ve got a full round of games available to us this weekend, and it’d be a fine shame not to mark them.

Cork City v Drogheda – Drogheda Double Chance

Cork City are the top scorers in the league, but also possess the joint-second-worst defensive record in the league – they’re completely erratic and prone to losing to sides that, had they more structure to their patterns of play, they’d be getting points from.

Drogheda have been the polar opposite. They’re incredibly structured and have been let down by their frontman Freddie Drape who’s yet to find his feet in the league.

But to get this price about a team who are well-drilled against a side who simply aren’t screams value to me, especially as Ruairi Keating won’t be able to operate in spaces between centre half and full back as both Weir and Ahui are lightning quick.

Shelbourne v Derry City – Derry City to Win

Shels finally got their breakthrough against Cork City when they travelled to Turners Cross in their last fixture. It has been coming as their results really didn’t reflect the efficiency with which they were playing.

But they specialise in winning the ball back against sides who aren’t used to having possession and thus get broken against and caught cold.

This won’t be the case with Derry City, who have so many talented player in the middle of the park that it shouldn’t be an issue. Even if they did get caught, Will Patching has been one of the most efficient holding midfielders in the league so far.

St. Pat’s v UCD – Over 3.5 Goals

Three of UCD’s six games have seen for or more goals in them. That’s down to two things – one is over-exuberance, and the second is because they’ve yet to field the same XI this season.

They know the task they’re facing, but in order for them to get any element of consistency into their game, they need to keep a core together.

That hasn’t happened and likely won’t happen here. Eoin Doyle has made a career out of capitalising on opposition giving the ball away and then punishing them.

When Pat’s have been good, they’ve drawn 2-2. When they’ve been bad, they’ve lost 5-0. I don’t foresee a situation where both sides don’t attack each other with extra vigour knowing this is a chance to capitalise on low morale.

Dundalk v Shamrock Rovers – Under 2.5 Goals

Contrary to UCD, Shamrock Rovers are in fact getting their core some game time now, but they’re so far behind the eight ball that it’s nervy for them to go and seize games in the manner they’re used to.

This should lead to a rather conservative approach against a Dundalk team who, through O’Malley and Tulloch have so much creativity in the opposite end of the pitch.

But they know themselves that a point is a good result, and despite looking maybe second-best to only Derry City so far, they probably know that European qualification is their limit. Expect caginess.
