This should be a straightforward task for Eclair d’Ainay who is a useful chaser and ran well when third on his seasonal reappearance at Wetherby in December, which was his first outing since undergoing a breathing operation. Eclair d’Ainay was disappointing at Sandown last time but he looks to have been found a very good opportunity to bounce back to winning ways in this novice hurdle, in which he faces two rivals who have shown little in this sphere. He is fitted with cheekpieces for the first time.
Templier is on a roll and can complete the quickfire hat-trick. He took advantage of a pace collapse when landing a strongly-run Sedgefield handicap by a wide margin a couple of weeks ago, but he showed that wasn’t a fluke, confirming his return to form, with an authoritative success at Ffos Las last week, pulling three and a half lengths clear after being produced to lead at the last. Templier is penalised for that success but is still fairly treated based on some of his older form and he looks the one to beat in this weak handicap.
Grandads Cottage overcame a lengthy absence to make a winning start over fences at Wetherby in December, scoring on his first outing since he landed a novice hurdle at Taunton in March 2021. He did well to win at Wetherby as he had been held up in a steadily-run affair, and he confirmed that positive impression when runner-up at Fontwell nine weeks later, showing improved form. Grandads Cottage, a £200,000 purchase after winning a point, remains unexposed as a chaser and could still do better.
Dickens showed some fairly useful form on the Flat, winning twice in that sphere, which suggests an opening BHA handicap hurdle mark of 95 could prove lenient. Dickens, a half-brother to the useful hurdler Sir Psycho, hasn’t made much of an impact over hurdles yet, pulling too hard to do himself justice. However, it’s still relatively early days and, around this sharp track, he is worth siding with on his handicap debut.
Broadway Boy relished the step up in trip to three miles when making a successful handicap hurdle debut at Aintree in December, overcoming inexperience to find plenty on the run-in and draw four and a quarter lengths clear. Broadway Boy failed to improve on that form when fourth at Exeter on his next start, while he didn’t make it beyond the second flight when unseating at Haydock last week, but he remains relatively unexposed as a staying handicapper and one still worth being positive about.
Shiyrvann produced his best effort yet when upped in trip to around two and a half miles at Southwell a few weeks ago, finding only a similarly unexposed rival too good. Shiyrvann was no match for the winner but he pulled 12 lengths clear of the third, which suggests a 2 lb rise in the weights may underestimate him. He could still be capable of better so makes obvious appeal in a race in which most of his rivals have questions to answer.
Katate Dori has shown plenty in two starts in bumpers and should prove hard to beat here. It’s notable that he was only an 11/4 chance when starting out in a listed bumper at Cheltenham, where he shaped with promise in fourth but was caught out by his lack of experience. He had to settle for second at Warwick last time, but he went through that race like the best horse at the weights only to be collared close home by a previous winner who delivered a later challenge. This looks like a good opportunity for Katate Dori to get off the mark.
