Unexposed 8yo Sponthus is much better than he showed at Huntingdon on Boxing Day and could be dangerous on today’s handicap debut but this drop back in trip looks the right move for course winner PILSDON PEN, who travelled strongly in first-time cheekpieces until his stamina ebbed away over 2m5f at Warwick a fortnight ago.
He needs to make amends for a short-odds defeat here a month ago but bumper winner BUCKHORN ROCCO began his hurdling career with two good efforts beforehand and might be the answer. That said, Venetia Williams’ new recruit Victtorino will be very hard to beat if his useful French chase form can be transferred to hurdles on his British debut.
Wind Tor has been looking badly out of touch but she won this last year off nearly a stone higher and, if she is to return to form, it could be today. However, RIVER TYNE is probably a winner waiting to happen in a race of this nature and she’s the safer play. Stanley Stanley is second preference ahead of Ya Know Yaseff.
It would be some effort under 12st but REVELS HILL (NAP) has been holding his own in stronger races than this and his class could count. Gwencily Berbas (second choice) is hardly Mr Reliable but he’s 2-2 over C&D and his Wetherby effort last time was no backward step. Poppa Poutine and Coolvalla are respected, while former Grade 2 winner Copperhead has developed a touch of the slows and it could be that he now needs a stamina test of these proportions.
Viroflay has impressed in recent points and can make a splash in hunter chases very soon but confidence in him would be much higher on good or faster ground. Singapore Saga (second choice) can make a bold bid from the front but Wetherby runner-up MORATORIUM is back in much calmer waters after struggling at Cheltenham last week and gets the nod.
All eight have shown some level of ability in either points or point bumpers. The fact that VINNIE SPARKLES has joined Dan Skelton’s ranks naturally heightens interest and he gets the nod over Clover All Over.
