13:30 Newbury – Blow Your Wad
If you go through his form you will see Blow Your Wad has finished close to some top-class horses. He ran a very good race in the big bumper at Aintree last April. He won at Kempton in November and his next run was in the Grade One Tolworth Hurdle, where he disappointed.
He’s had a wind operation which should help to fix any breathing issues he is still reasonably handicapped, especially if the wind op has the desired effect. Inneston is the danger as he hit the front too soon when getting beaten at Sandown last time.
13:50 Kelso – Salvino
Trainer Sandy Thomson has such a good record at this track that it is hard to ignore. His seven-year-old Salvino won at the track earlier this season and is a real galloper. Musselburgh didn’t really play to his strengths last time, but a return to Kelso swings it in his favour.
Prairie Wolf is the danger and was unlucky not to win at Doncaster last time. His has form on soft ground but keeps going up in the weights without winning. He’s consistent so is a big danger.
14:05 Newbury – The Big Bite
The Big Bite won nicely at Newbury last time after a ding-dong battle with Gemirande. He likes flat tracks and the cheekpieces seem to work. He can come forward from that win. Super Six will be so much happier going left-handed again now, than when finishing behind Honneur D’ajonc at Hereford two starts back.
He was barely rideable for Sam Twiston-Davies that day, as he was going very badly left and has subsequently won easily at Haydock. Riders Onthe Storm could be interesting in a first-time visor. That may spark a return to form – but it needs to – as he has finished very weekly in his last few runs.
14:25 Kelso – Jet Legs
Patrick Wadge is a very promising young 5lb claimer and that will be handy for Martin Todhunter’s Jet Legs who is a progressive six-year-old and could take a bit of beating. Inis Oirr won a decent novice hurdle at Musselburgh in February but was ultimately disappointing in a Grade 2 contest at Haydock. He can’t be ignored at this track.
14:40 Newbury – Fortuna Ligna
Anthony Honeyball trains this daughter of Soldier of Fortune. She looked all over the winner last time and was ultimately disappointing. She wears blinkers for the first time and that should have the desired effect. The booking of Harry Cobden show real intent, so she gets the nod.
Ruby Island should give you a good run for your money but Fortuna Ligna finished a neck in front of her when third in a Cheltenham bumper last November and now receives 7lbs.

15:00 – Kelso – Bonttay
Bonttay is a beautiful daughter of Westerner who has slowly been finding her feet over obstacles. She finished second to Jane Du Berlais at Lingfield earlier this season when her jumping held her back. It’s really interesting that Fergal O’Brien has reached for cheekpieces to sharpen everything up.
This track should play to her strengths and she was a very good bumper mare and holds a few of these on her bumper form. She has to concede weight but could be better than her current handicap rating.
15:35 – Kelso – Hill Sixteen
A couple of Sandy Thompson runners catches my eye. Hill Sixteen has been a little disappointing, but has had a wind operation since finishing seventh in the Becher Chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree. He is smart on his day and his run behind Sounds Russian earlier in the season is good enough to win this.
Hopefully, the wind op has the desired effect. The biggest danger could be his stablemate Doyen Breed who will be ridden by Ryan Mania. He ran a nice race behind Minella Drama last time and he will love this 3m 2f test.
