12:05 – Bathrat Leon
Meydan is at its fastest early in the day historically and Bathrat Leon took full advantage of that 12 months ago when making all to win at 66/1. A relative unknown at the time, he has more than backed that up since with good runs in Japan, Europe and most recently when winning on the Saudi Cup card. This looks no better than last year’s race and if breaking cleanly, should be able to get to the lead again and hopefully stay there.
12:40 – Quickthorn (each-way)
Quickthorn looked like he could have the Stayers’ division at his feet last year when beating Coltraine by 14 lengths in the Summer, but got stuck in the mud somewhat when disappointing in the Cadran on Arc weekend and the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day. He looks like the forgotten horse in this market and represents good each-way value with an extra place on offer with Paddy Power. Hopefully he can return to form, back on a sounder surface.
13:15 Sight Success
This season and last suggest a high draw is a must in this contest, so I’m putting a line through anything drawn low. The market is coming to Sight Success, a front-runner from Hong Kong who has been drawn well in 13 and obviously gets a huge jockey upgrade as Ryan Moore is riding. Expect our duo to grab the near side rail and prove tricky to catch.
13:50 – Derma Sotogake
I don’t rate the local form at all here. Tall Boy is an average enough Stakes horse in the US and won the local trial for this. He wouldn’t be anywhere near the level of Worcester when trained in the US. Worcester himself has drawn a tricky gate in 11 and, while respected, will need to work out a safe passage from there.
Derma Sotogake would be my idea of the one to be on. He ran a cracker to finish third in the Saudi Derby, a race that favours more speedy types, and should relish the extra one and a half furlongs now. He faired best of those held up that day and was doing his best work late on.
He rates a fair chance to gain compensation.
14:25 Sibelius (each-way)
The Florida to Meydan route has proved successful in the recent past (XY Jet, Zendon) and Sibelius has a very similar profile to them, winning the same trials. Ryan Moore will need to be alert to go from stall one, but if breaking on terms, he has plenty of early toe to put the inside draw to good use.
Sibelius doesn’t have oceans of improvement to find and a double-figure price with Paddy paying an extra place looks appealing.

15:10 – Danon Beluga
This looks one of the strongest-ever renewals and certainly stronger than the race Lord North won last year. He’ll need to up his game to score again. As with much of the card, Japan look to have the aces with Serifos and Danon Beluga.
The latter has strung a series of good runs together in defeat in some of the hottest Japanese turf group races and gets a good opportunity to have his day in the sun now, at a distance that should be perfect. An ideal draw in stall 4 and a great jockey in Joao Moreira should help him go close.
16:00 – Equinox
There’s nothing original at the prices, but this fella looks a machine and could be a serious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe contender if connections targeted it next Autumn. With respect to the likes of Rebels Romance, Mostahdaf and Westover, none are at the level of Equinox and all will need him to underperform to score here.
For forecast backers, Shahryar has done little wrong since taking this last year and looks a decent shout to follow Equinox home.
16:35 T O Keynes
Just the eight line up from from Japan here! While they look to have a tall order in overturning last year’s winner Country Grammar and local superstar Algiers, the draw has certainly made that possible. With the two above housed in stalls 13 and 14, it could be better to find something to oppose them with at a price. I’ve gone for T O Keynes who is well drawn in gate 6 for Oisin Murphy.
He brings some top Japanese dirt form to the table and skipped the Saudi Cup meeting to target this contest. Again, doesn’t look to have oceans of improvement to find on form.
