13:30 Newbury – Atlanta Brave

I was quite keen on Atlanta Brave for Kerry Lee. I like Innocent but I thought this might have come too soon after the EBF final at Sandown. That’s always a really punishing race, Innocent ran really well to be second there.

It looks like Atlanta Brave is being rolled out as more of a spring campaign. The handicapper has given him a mark of 125, which requires a little bit of improvement based on the bare run of previous runs.

Kerry Lee seems to have her horses in pretty good order. Three of the last six have won. So I’m more than happy to stick with Atlanta Brave.

14:05 Newbury – The Big Bite

There’s a lot of pace on in this race, therefore I want something that’s going to come from just off that pace. I think that despite going up on the weights, The Big Bite is well enough handicapped to go and win this. He’s a horse that went a long time without winning, but he was very well backed at a big price before scoring at Newbury over this course and distance last time.

The softer ground might be a little bit of a concern for him, but he does have form on softer ground. He’s tricky, but he’s talented. This race is going to suit him, the course clearly does suit him and I don’t think he needs to improve a lot if this race pans out as expected.

14:25 Kelso – Pym

I’m going to take a flier here on Pym, who comes back from about 18-months off the track. You’re taking a massive gamble with him, but the fact that connections are persevering with him suggest they think he’s still got life in him.

It seems to me that, although there’s more chance of him blowing out than winning, off a mark of 122, he wants to lead, that he’s worth taking a chance on.

14:40 Newbury – Aubis Walk

Aubis Walk ran a very good race to be second at Kelso in December. She also bolted up in a pretty ordinary race at Sedgefield last time out.  She looks like she’s got loads of ability.

The form out of Nicky Richards has really taken off in recent days. Since the Friday of Cheltenham, he has had nine runners – five have won and another two have placed. She looks a decent bet for a yard which has suddenly hit form with a vengeance.

15:00 Kelso – Bonntay (nap)

Given Bonntay’s (nap) form, she’s got potentially a very lenient opening mark of 110. She’s not been seen to best effects in any one of those three hurdle races to date. She will improve under a more aggressive ride than she’s got so far and this race should set up pretty nicely for her.

I’d expect Paddy Brennan to ride Bonttay a little closer to the pace here, for all she’s unlikely to take any part in the early skirmishes, and she has the raw ability to rate much higher when ridden to best effect, especially if she can find more fluency in her jumping. The fitting of cheekpieces should be some help in that regard and she looks a solid bet.

15:35 Kelso – Forward Plan

Forward Plan does seem to be progressing and you do want to stay with these progressive stayers when they hit form. I see no reason to be against him here. Doyen Breed may be the one to give him the most to do in this race.

He was very consistent as a novice, was out of form at the start of the season but came back to win here last time. If he can repeat that, he’ll push hard. But, Forward Plan is the preference here.
