13:40 Dare To Shout

DARE TO SHOUT opened his account on his final start in points and shaped with promise when runner-up to a useful sort on Rules debut over course and distance at the end of January. He built on that promise when going one place better at Kelso last month, stretching clear of a previous winner in the style of an above-average sort. There should be plenty more to come now and he is strongly fancied to defy a penalty. Sleeping Satellite, who was a winner at Carlisle last time, also has better days ahead of him.

14:15 Onesoc

ONESOC put in a good round of jumping when gaining his first success over fences at Southwell 12 days ago and, with the prospect of better to come from him now moving back up in trip, a subsequent 4 lb rise in the weights may well underestimate him, so he is taken to follow up. Fakir and the 2021 winner of this, Road Warrior, have both slipped to dangerous marks but if, as expected, Gold Emery steps up on his chase debut at Uttoxeter, he could provide the main threat.

14:50 Lebowski

LEBOWSKI looked better than ever when making a winning reappearance in a soft-ground handicap at Wetherby in December, well in command on the run-in and looking like a horse to follow. Admittedly, he has been disappointing in both of his starts since, but he was too keen at Musselburgh last month and was probably flying too high in the Morebattle at Kelso last time. The key to him appears to be testing ground and he will get that here, so he is well worth another chance in a first-time hood. Thereisnodoubt was ahead of the selection at Kelso last time and is feared most ahead of Albert’s Back.

15:25 Small Present

There’s an air of unfinished business surrounding SMALL PRESENT as a staying chaser, running a cracker when third in the Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen on Boxing Day and finding himself too far back in the Grand National Trial at Haydock last month. He is much better judged on his previous effort and he also races from his correct mark here – he was 1 lb out of the handicap at Haydock – while he is also effective in testing conditions. This mark should be beyond him and he looks a big player back in trip. Geryville arrives on the back of a brace of wins and he’s a threat, while Omar Maretti could be dangerous if reacting positively to headgear.

16:00 Maid Of Houxty

MAID OF HOUXTY has shown glimpses of promise over fences and she wasted no time returning to form when third at Ayr last month, still in the hunt jumping the last two but having no extra to give in the closing stages. That form has worked out particularly well, with the winner, fourth and fifth all winning next time out, so she makes a fair bit of appeal now racing from the same mark on ground which won’t be a problem. Catlin has to be feared given that she’s unbeaten in three starts at this track and Nick Kent’s charge is a clear second choice.

Newcastle Races Jumps

16:35 Burrows Hall

BURROWS HALL remains a maiden but he has shaped well on several occasions now, notably when runner-up to a next-time-out winner on his hurdling debut at Hexham in April last year. He ran better than his finishing position suggests on his return from nine months off in a good race at Doncaster in January and he left the impression he is fairly treated on his handicap debut at Wetherby earlier this month. He has the potential to improve a fair bit for this step up in trip and has excellent claims of opening his account now. Gavroche d’Allier should benefit from the refitting of cheekpieces, so he’s regarded as the main threat.

17:07 March Wind

Of those with experience, MARCH WIND sets a very good standard and, provided none of the newcomers are above average, this should be a good opportunity for her. She has plenty of stamina in her pedigree so hopefully she will be ridden more forcefully this time round and she is well up to winning a race of this nature. Lunar Chief is the pick of the newcomers.
