Cheltenham Tips: Mick Fitzgerald’s Day 2 picks of the Festival

Mick is raring to go for Champion Chase day at Cheltenham.

Mick Fitzgerald’s Cheltenham Tips

13:30 – Impaire Et Passe
14:10 – Sir Gerhard
14:50 – Langer Dan
15:30 – Edwardstone
16:10 – Delta Work
16:50 – Elixir De Nutz (each way)
17:30 – A Dream To Share

DAY 2 IS DONE, AND HERE’S THE FANCIES FOR THURSDAY:

13:30 – Impaire Et Passe

Impaire Et Passe was a very good winner of the Moscow Flyer hurdle over two miles and the step up in trip shouldn’t be an issue here. The soft ground holds no worries for him and I get the impression that he is one of the strongest fancies coming over this week for the Willie Mullins team.

14:10 – Sir Gerhard

I might be nuts going against the unbeaten favourite Gerri Colombe but the Irish challenger Sir Gerhard is rated higher than him. He is already a winner at the Cheltenham Festival when winning the Ballymore Hurdle last year. He does lack a little experience over fences, but there is no doubting his talent. He gets the nod at the likely prices.

14:50 – Langer Dan

The Skelton team bumped into Galopin Des Champs a couple of years (when rated 142!) in the Martin Pipe Conditional Hurdle when he was runner-up to this year’s Gold Cup favourite. How unlucky was that! Langer Dan is still well handicapped and has to have a chance in this contest.

15:30 – Edwardstone

The Champion Chase is the feature race on day two and last year’s Arkle winner Edwardstone is versatile as far as ground goes. This race is going to set up perfectly for him. He can sit just behind the strong pace that will be set by a couple of these, his Cheltenham conqueror on Trials day, Editeur du Gite, in particular. I can see him turning for home still travelling well and striding up the hill to win with Editeur du Gite and Energumene behind him.

16:10 – Delta Work

The ground could end up being the key in this contest. Delta Work revelled in the soft conditions last year when beating Tiger Roll. Galvin definitely favours slightly better ground. They are both Grade One winners and apparently his trainer Gordon Elliott has had Galvin schooled over these Cross Country fences at every opportunity and Delta Work did win over them at first time of asking last year.

16:50 – Elixir De Nutz (each-way)

I was really impressed with the way Elixir De Nutz won at Wincanton. He is a nine-year-old, but he is much more tractable now than in his earlier years. He put in a very taking performance at Newbury last time behind Funambule Sivola in a graded race. He is a strong traveller in his races and that is what you will need in this contest. Last year’s winner was a relatively exposed ten-year-old who went off at 28/1.

17:30 – A Dream To Share

This is a great story as A Dream To Share has recently been sold to JP McManus but the former owner, my ITV colleague Brian Gleeson’s son keeps the ride. Trainer John Kiely is an octogenarian and would get a huge reception if this horse wins. He looked really good at the Dublin Racing Festival and was bought after he won there.
