Impose Toi won both starts in France, landing a couple of bumpers, and although he lost his unbeaten record on his hurdling debut and first start for Nicky Henderson at Ludlow in January, he still shaped well. Impose Toi led on the bridle entering the straight but was unable to shake off the attentions of the winner who rallied to lead between the final couple of flights and pulled out enough to score by three-quarters of a length.
Impose Toi went like the best prospect in the race, though, and is entitled to improve with that experience under his belt so he should prove difficult to beat here. Roccovango was disappointing at Southwell last time, but he did make a significant error at the third-last so is probably better judged on the form of his hurdling debut at Haydock where he finished third. He can chase the selection home.
Dark Duomo has made no impact in a trio of starts over hurdles but there are reasons to think he might be capable of better now he steps into handicap company off a lowly mark. Dark Duomo is out of a half-sister to the very smart staying chaser Virak so ought to appreciate this marked step up in trip (has only raced at around two miles so far) while the application of cheekpieces could also spark some improvement. Trainer Philip Hobbs has also been among the winners of late.
American Sniper was pulled up at Leicester on his penultimate start but, fitted with cheekpieces, he was back to form when runner-up in a novice hurdle at Newbury last week. American Sniper had a tough task trying to concede 5 lb to a rival with comparable form, but he gave a good account of himself, sticking to his task well to go down by a length while pulling 32 lengths clear of the third. He looks a big player stepping back into handicap company here.
Irish point winner Red Dirt Road also made a successful start to his career under Rules when landing a maiden hurdle at Southwell in November. He had to settle for second at Leicester when last seen in December, but he enhanced his standing as he was only beaten a neck despite giving 6 lb to the winner and racing further away from the favoured outside of the track. He goes handicapping off a fair mark on his return from a break, and he remains open to further improvement.
Blue Shark has been a revelation since stepping up two and a half miles this season and completed the five-timer when successful at Huntingdon last month. Four of his five victories have been achieved by distances of less than a length which has allowed him to stay a step ahead of the handicapper, and he arguably won with a bit more in hand than the three-quarter-length margin might suggest last time as he appeared to idle on the run-in. He has gone up 5 lb but is clearly still going the right way and is worth siding with.
Mutual Respect is still searching for a first win after 16 starts but he probably would have opened his account had he not blundered and unseated his rider at the second-last when in a share of the lead and going best at Huntingdon last month. That was the third time in his last four starts that Mutual Respect has failed to complete, so he clearly needs to brush up on his jumping, but he appeals as being on a fair mark.
