There is some doubt about who will make the running and Jubilee Girl is probably the most likely candidate. If she reverts to more patient tactics and there is a muddling pace that would put less pressure on the unproven stamina of DUBAI JEANIUS so he gets a tentative vote on the step up to 2m. September Power has an unbeaten record of 2-2 over C&D and is second choice, although Tigerten is on a useful mark for his new yard and should do better at some stage.
An interesting novice, with pace seemingly plentiful. The consistent Erosion Risk and second choice Medici Chapel (a half-sister to the classy sprinter Duke of Firenze) appreciate going forward, while the returning Shine’s Ambition is another with a prominent run style. There isn’t much between those three and the selection is CRIMSON ANGEL who could potentially pick up the pieces late on to supplement her recent Lingfield gains.
With the step up in trip likely to suit her, the ex-Irish STAR ANGEL can get off the mark at her fourth attempt. The once-raced Silence Is Golden and the bumper/hurdles winner Coquelicot should also go well.
Some are unknown quantities here regarding the trip and/or the track, most significantly Phantasy Mac who was still improving when last seen in the autumn but now tackles her first 7f handicap on her track debut. She is very interesting but preference is for tried-and-trusted ZIP who was in the form of his life when making all from Justcallmepete over C&D last time out. There is nothing between them on these terms but the latter took an age to pick up and Zip may again have enough in reserve to hold him off.
It’s easy to pick holes in the majority, but the shortlist includes the lightly raced Galton and the mostly in-form Iron Sheriff who continues to seek that elusive first AW win. However, the tentative suggestion is the Ollie Pears-trained COLIGONE KATE. She has a little work to do with Galton based on recent Newcastle form but is joint top-rated and has run well here in the past.
The recent C&D clash between the winner SOUTHWOLD, Covert Mission (second), Masqool (third) and Roman Dynasty (sixth) holds the most striking clues, with the sneaking suspicion being that the lightly raced and willing winner is open to a degree more improvement than those reopposing rivals. Others in with a shout include the reliable Southwell regular Daafy and Showmedemoney who caught the attention of the stewards at Newcastle.
The three to concentrate most on are the seemingly luckless Isle of Wolves and the last-time Lingfield winners Theonlywayiswessex and KINGSTON JOY (nap). The selection is a lightly raced and lowly weighted daughter of the 2014 St Leger hero Kingston Hill and she should be capable of more improvement.
