13:15 Kelso – Castle Rushen

We may not have seen the best of Castle Rushen who was well supported before unseating his rider late on at Newcastle on his last start. He is by Fame and Glory out of a mare, by Presenting which should allow him to perform well on a decent surface. He has some very good form over hurdles and was narrowly beaten at Carlisle by Pay the Piper. He could still be reasonably well handicapped.

13:30 Doncaster – Gold Des Bois

If you watch his last race at Musselburgh, Gold Des Bois made two very bad mistakes which completely knocked him out of contention. I would rather judge him on his very good run when fifth to Pay the Piper at this venue last time out. He is a too big price definitely one with a strong chance.

13:50 Kelso – Colonel Mustard

Colonel Mustard finished third behind two very smart horses in State Man and First Street in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham last year. He is only 3lb higher now for this contest and reverts to timber form an aborted chasing career. He could be the value in this contest, despite top weight. Teddy Blue was third in the Betfair Hurdle and a reproduction of that form would make him very competitive in this contest.

14:10 Newbury – Whatsupwithyou

He put in a very good run at Kempton in December when last seen and was running on very strongly at the finish. The ground is not a problem and this track will suit Whatsupwithyou.

14:25 Kelso – Nemean Lion

I loved the way he went through his last race as I am not convinced he was at his best on that very soft ground at Sandown. Nemean Lion looked really smart at Hereford when winning three starts ago and back on a nice surface could improve again.

I see Nemean Lion running a huge race. Irish challenger Feronily has taken an unusual path to this 2m 2f hurdle having won a point-to-point last November and then ran in two Leopardstown bumpers. He finished second last month at the Dublin Racing Festival to leading Cheltenham Bumper fancy, A Dream To Share.

He could turn out to be too good for these and Emmet Mullins does well with his UK raids. I’ll stick with Kerry Lee’s charge, Nemean Lion.

14:45 Newbury – Paint the Dream

Fergal O’Brien has his team in good form and Paint the Dream has good course form and good form on decent ground too. Zanza has been a thorn in my side but made it five wins from five runs over fences at the track. It is difficult to oppose him but he has gone up 15lbs for the his latest win and that makes me look elsewhere.

Cheltenham Festival 2023 Preview Night

15:00 Kelso – Nells Son

Trainer Nicky Richards has given Nells Son a wind operation and he didn’t run too badly at Cheltenham last time behind Hacker Des Places over two miles. The ground is very different now and he steps up to 2m 4f.

Nells Son won at this fixture last year and backed that up with a good fourth to Three Stripe Life in a Grade One at Aintree. There could be more to come.

15:15 Doncaster – Cooper’s Cross

A good winner at the track last time when the headgear was applied and it made all the difference. He has gone up just 5lbs in the ratings for that win and gets my vote.

15:35 Kelso – The Shunter

Another Emmett Mullins raider and now the weights for the Aintree Grand National next month have been released, expect to see a few of the entries there starting to run well again.

The Shunter won here last season before picking up a £100k bonus by following up at the Cheltenham Festival in the Paddy Power Plate Handicap. The long straight at Kelso will suit him. He is prone to the odd jumping error, but gets 4lbs off fellow National entry Le Milos of Dan Skelton’s and that just swings things in his favour.
