OPEN CHAMPION was near useful on the Flat for Roger Varian last year, building on previous promise when winning a mile and a half maiden at Lingfield and running creditably in handicaps after. He was purchased by new connections for £70,000 in October and appeals as the type who will do well in this sphere (nice sort physically). He has joined another top yard and a big run is expected on hurdling debut. Active Duty and Charles St have some of the best form on offer and look the dangers.
14:15 – Notnowlinda
NOTNOWLINDA is a winning Irish pointer who displayed a willing attitude when making a successful debut over hurdles at Warwick and, though she disappointed in better company at Cheltenham, she quickly resumed winning ways back in calmer waters at Catterick last time. On that evidence, she doesn’t look badly treated now making her handicap debut, and can win again for a top yard. Windtothelightning should have more to offer on the back of her Sedgefield success and can provide the chief threat.
14:45 – Kateira
KATEIRA created an excellent impression when making a winning start in a bumper at Huntingdon last season and she has made a very promising start over hurdles, too, winning both of her starts. She looked potentially useful when sauntering clear of her rivals at Huntingdon last time, looking in a different league to her rivals, and she can record another win here before maybe taking her chance at the Cheltenham Festival next month. Passionate Pursuit probably would have won if she hadn’t unseated her rider soon after two out at Wincanton on Boxing Day and is feared most.
15:15 – Kingofthewest
KINGOFTHEWEST was a dual winner over hurdles last season and he was far from disgraced in a handicap at Exeter at the beginning of the month, settling well in midfield but not getting the clearest run leaving the back straight. He was unable to get back into the race afterwards but he’s weighted to go well having been dropped 4 lb in the weights and is worth another chance. Martha Brae, who is a course winner, and the consistent Ballintubber Boy are also of interest.

15:45 – Keepyourdreamsbig
KEEPYOURDREAMSBIG shaped with promise on just his second go over fences when runner-up at Leicester, finishing with running left while leaving the impression he was in need of further, and he remains of interest now back in this sphere having been dropped 2 lb by the assessor. Hiway One O Three is feared most, especially if jumping better than when third at Wincanton last time, as he also figures on a potentially lenient mark.
16:15 – Imperial Pride
IMPERIAL PRIDE delivered an assured round of jumping when runner-up on her debut in this sphere and at this venue a fortnight ago and, with hopes high that this step back up in trip will work in her favour, she looks a solid choice racing from the same mark in a tight handicap. Large Action has good claims but Imperial Pride may have most to fear from Elleon, who has found just one too good the last twice and his turn is surely near.
16:45 – Crystal Mer
CRYSTAL MER has a smart Flat pedigree and he was well found in the market when making his debut at Doncaster in November but that came at a time when the yard were quiet. He took a big step forward when finishing fifth in a listed bumper at Cheltenham last time, though, despite seemingly being unsuited by a drop back in trip. That form sets a clear standard in this bumper and he should be able to open his account now. He may have most to fear from newcomers, with Borodale and Whatawit of particular interest.
