EARTH CRY looked a good prospect in bumpers, showing above-average form when defying a penalty at Market Rasen on his return in September, and he shaped better than the bare result on his hurdling debut at Ludlow in November. He got caught further back than ideal on that occasion while also showing signs of inexperience and he seems sure to do better moving forward. This looks an excellent opportunity for him. What A Steal and Universal Secret could be the pair to fill the places.
Plenty of these have some questions to answer and it is FLAGRANT DELITIEP who gets the nod having now fallen 3 lb below his last winning mark which came over this course and distance in March last year. He probably paid for trying to keep tabs on the winner at Lingfield last time and should appreciate this step back up in trip. Flic Ou Voyou could emerge as the chief threat if resurgent after a break.
Only four runners in this year’s renewal of the Kingwell Hurdle but FIRST STREET, Knappers Hill and I Like To Move It are all closely matched on their effort in the Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham last time. First Street came out on top that day and he probably deserved extra credit for his finishing position given he came from further back than ideal. A return to two miles should also suit and he gets a narrow vote over Knappers Hill, who can boast an unbeaten record over course and distance.
EDEIFFS ELTON was going better than the winner when falling at the second-last on his return to fences at Hereford in November and he has ran two solid races in defeat on his last two starts at Exeter and Wincanton. He probably wasn’t suited by a more aggressive ride than usual on his latest start but he remains well enough handicapped – just 1 lb higher than when successful in this race 12 months ago – and should relish the return to this longer trip. Fantastikas, who is now returned to calmer waters, and Wake Up Early, may emerge as the chief threats.
On the back of his fine effort in a valuable handicap at Sandown a fortnight ago, JET OF MAGIC is likely to prove a tough nut to crack back down in class here. He still held every chance when making a mistake at the second-last and will go close if in the same form with a good amateur taking 7 lb off. Seelotmorebusiness did the job well when returning to action at Huntingdon and merits respect despite going up 11 lb. However, Forever William kept on finding when scoring at Taunton and he could be a bigger threat with this step up in trip a good move.
BEYOND REDEMPTION appeared to have plenty left in the tank when making a winning start for this yard over course and distance last month, left with very little to beat but doing so impressively nonetheless, and he looks capable of defying an 11 lb rise in the weights. The one for the forecast could be My Silver Lining, who shapes as though this stiffer test will be in her favour.
COPSHILL LAD didn’t live up to expectations at Catterick last time, well backed but never really looking like landing the money, but he shaped well on his hurdling debut prior to that and his bumper win gives him scope for improvement, so he’s well worth another chance from what may turn out to be a lenient mark on handicap debut. Hititi has been in good form over fences and looks the main danger ahead of Electric Annie.
