2.10 Punchestown – ANGELS DAWN

With half of a disappointing 12 runner field for this event being sent out by messrs Mullins and Elliott you would be forgiven for thinking that one of the mighty training twins have this Grand National Trial wrapped around their fingers. However, most of their runners are thoroughly exposed and I would much rather have an interest in this lightly raced individual who looks set to flourish over this distance of ground.

The selection has been brought along steadily by Sam Curling and when he won his last race off 115, all he did was gallop all the way through the line over the three miles at Down Royal. This is of course a significant step up grade for this lightly raced eight-year-old that is set to run off a 6lbs higher mark.

However, his sound jumping allied to his deep stamina should see him play a major role here against his more experienced campaigners the best of which could well be recent Fairyhouse winner Punitive and the very well handicapped Champagne Platinum. The last named may well be worth an each-way saver if he is a positive in the market place.

2.50 Musselburgh – GETABEAU

A low grade novices handicap hurdle over 2m4f which is probably one of the last races of the day most pundits will be looking at to have an interest in as at first glance it looks very tricky. But these are the kind of races that often throw up value if you do enough homework.

Heros de Moutiers runs off his lowest handicap mark in his brief career to date, but I just feel that an extra half mile would be more up the street of this former point to point winner. Both Euchen Falls and Smart Boyo are surely better than they have shown of late and any market moves should be heeded, but the selection is just as interesting now that he is set to return to a more suitable surface.

Chris Grant’s charge has run well on good to soft ground on several occasions this season, but a deeper surface seemed to catch him out on his last two starts at Newcastle and Wetherby. Set to make his handicap debut off a lowly 88, stepping up to two and a half miles and with Brian Hughes in the saddle all sign posts a career best run in the offing here.

3.35 – Newbury – SISTER SOPHIE

Several of these are sure to benefit from the step up to three miles for the first time or returning to this trip on top of the ground. Interestingly, joint top weight Marsh Wren won over an extended two and a quarter miles on very deep ground last time out at Exeter, but only asserted inside the final 100 yards.

The return to this trip shouldn’t prove a problem and alongside fellow highest rated Midnight Reflection, her chance is clear to see with more improvement to come.

But this is quite clearly the most competitive race on the card and as such those two may have to take another major step forward and I fancy that they will struggle to give over a stone to my selection.

The daughter of Dr Massini is bred to stay well and had no chance over two and half miles at Fontwell Park last time out off just an even gallop, being badly outpaced at the third last before staying on nicely up the final stiff climb at the Sussex track, albeit being beaten some 27 lengths.

What she needs is a good test on a sound surface where she can potter around in rear before making stealthy headway and then putting her stamina to good use down the long home stretch at Newbury. Yes, it’s a tough race to dissect, but she looks huge each-way value if the race goes according to plan.

3.45 Punchestown – COVENTRY

There are 17 set to go to post for this staying handicap hurdle and several of these have been plying their trade at a higher level than this. Top weight Gallant John Joe has been running in some decent chases of late, still 0-9 in that arena, but is rated fully 8lbs lower over timber.

The evergreen 12-year-old A Great View has been a regular in the top handicap staying hurdles over the past few years and the assessor is finally beginning to give him some relief, but the selection still remains open to a modicum of improvement and there have been signs recently that he could well take advantage of a slipping rating.

Only one from 19 under rules (1-12 over hurdles) he has been set some pretty tough tasks by Gordon Elliott in the past six months both on the level and over hurdles. Last time out, it seems that the blinkers had an adverse effect on him as he dropped himself out and only ran on late when the race was all over behind the impressive Maxxum.

Previously though I thought he was a massive eye catcher when staying on at just the one pace behind Shewearsitwell over this course and distance, also ran well here four outings ago. Now a further 9lbs lower in the weights, mainly due to Danny Gilligan’s 7lbs claim, if his young rider can keep him sweet through the middle part of the race, the son of Galileo is weighted to run a huge race at an each-way price.
