LAC DE CONSTANCE was still travelling well when unseating his rider at the eighth fence in the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase at Kempton last time and hopefully that will be just a blip in his progress over fences. He’d looked an exciting prospect when making a successful chasing debut at the same course in November and the drop in grade today provides him with an ideal opportunity to get back on track with a win.
14:30 – Off To A Flyer
OFF TO A FLYER was possibly unsuited by the drop back in trip when finishing third in a novice event at Kempton on Boxing Day, just staying on at the one pace to pass the post around 20 lengths behind the winner. Bought for £180,000 after winning his sole start in Irish points, he is very much the type to go on improving as his stamina is drawn out further and this looks a weak contest in which he might not need to improve to get off the mark over hurdles.
15:00 – Kissesforkatie
KISSESFORKATIE produced a career-best effort when filling the runner-up spot at Wincanton on Boxing Day, pushing a smart prospect all the way despite having to concede that rival 11 lb. Beaten less than two lengths at the line, she is clearly a useful mare and it’s not out of the question that she may yet have more to offer after just three starts over fences. This will be her toughest test yet now stepping up to listed level, but she is fancied to prove equal to the task.
15:30 – Luccia
LUCCIA made it three from three with an impressive victory on her hurdling debut in a listed mares’ contest at Newbury in November, running to a useful level at the first attempt as she jumped fluently and travelled strongly before forging clear to win by five and a half lengths. She seems sure to go on to bigger and better things and her five rivals here will all need to improve significantly to even give her a race.

16:00 – Lynwood Gold
LYNWOOD GOLD bounced back to his best to resume winning ways at Lingfield in November, quickly asserting on the run-in to win by six lengths in dominant fashion. This demands more from a 7 lb higher mark, but he has plenty of good form to call upon from his time in Ireland when trained by Jessica Harrington. It’s still early days with the Brian Barr yard and another bold bid seems assured if he can build on the promise of last time.
16:30 – Run To Milan
RUN TO MILAN goes well at this track and produced a career best when winning this race 12 months ago, making all in very testing conditions to win by two and three-quarter lengths. Admittedly, he’s failed to match that effort in four subsequent starts, but his latest run at Sandown wasn’t far off, keeping on well to claim a never-nearer third (beaten seven lengths) close home. Crucially, he is now 5 lb lower in the weights than last year, so it’s hard to look past him in his repeat bid.
17:00 – Love Bite
LOVE BITE is a sister to two winners, including the smart hurdler/useful chaser Beat That, and she is also a half-sister to the smart hurdler/top-class chaser Might Bite. That is about as good as it gets when it comes to National Hunt pedigrees and her trainer Nicky Henderson typically enjoys plenty of success with his runners in bumpers. The market is likely to prove the best guide in a race restricted to newcomers, but Love Bite certainly has plenty to recommend her on paper.
