Shomen Uchi won a bumper at Hereford before finishing a creditable sixth in the Grade 2 bumper at Aintree last season and he made an encouraging start over hurdles when second back at Hereford in December. Shomen Uchi only went down by a head to a rival who had hurdling experience and race fitness on his side, and he is likely to take a step forward with that outing under his belt.
Modreeney, a bumper winner in Ireland, didn’t show much during his first campaign over hurdles for Christian Williams last season, but he probably would have gone close on his return at Taunton in December had he not departed at the final flight. He’s edged up only 1 lb for that effort and looks a big player.
Heltenham has progressed with each run since being sent chasing and he dug deep to get off the mark in this sphere at Newcastle in December. He’s going the right way and there could be better to come if his jumping becomes more polished with experience, so he looks like a big player despite a 7 lb rise in the weights.
Bobmahley has proved largely consistent over the last few seasons and he ran up to his best when scoring over course and distance last month. That was a weakish affair but there was a lot to like about the way Bobmahley completed the task, quickening four and three-quarter lengths clear under just a hands-and-heels ride. He was well on top at the finish so a 6 lb rise in the weights is fair enough, and another bold bid is on the cards.
Turning Gold didn’t have much to beat in selling company at Leicester last time – only one of his six rivals finished – but he looked on good terms with himself, jumping and travelling well on his way to a very wide-margin win, and he appears to be on a fair mark on his return to handicap company. He’s only 2 lb above the mark he readily defied at Leicester last year and is worth siding with. The usual cheekpieces were left off last time but are back on again.

Bombay Sapphire, a winner on her bumper debut in Ireland, failed to meet expectations when only fifth in an Aintree bumper on her first start for Nicky Henderson, but she made an encouraging start over hurdles when third at Lingfield in December. Bombay Sapphire was outpaced around the home turn in that two-miler but she kept on in encouraging fashion, looking sure to benefit from a stiffer test. The form of that contest has worked out quite nicely and Bombay Sapphire can raise her game over this two-and-a-half-mile trip.
Acey Milan was disappointing when last seen over hurdles at Haydock in April, but he had run well when runner-up at Wincanton prior to that. He has gone well when fresh in the past and has shown enough to suggest he’s an interesting addition to the hunter chase ranks.
