Dublin Racing Festival Tips: Rory Delargy’s Leopardstown fancies on Saturday

Rory is taking on Galopin Des Champs in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup (15:05) and siding with Stattler on the opening day of the Dublin Racing Festival.

13:20 – Weveallbeencaught

I’m looking for a big run from Weveallbeencaught here. He’s one of just a couple of English-trained runners over the weekend, and such enterprise merits reward. Third to Hermes Allen on his hurdles bow, the selection beat last week’s Cheltenham Grade 2 winner Rock My Way there last month, and “will win a Gold Cup” according to the ebullient Twiston-Davies. The Albert Bartlett would suffice for me, but a win here would bolster confidence in that project.

13:55 – Gust Of Wind

It’s hard to weigh up the Spring as Lossiemouth is too short to back and stablemates Gala Marceau and Gust Of Wind also have very useful form in France, and can’t be ruled out. The former has already been beaten by Lossiemouth, but may yet do better, while Gust of Wind will be making his debut for Willie here. He appeals most for each-way purposes if all eight stand their ground, with Tekao making more appeal as a handicapper and perhaps using this as a sighter for the Boodles rather than the Triumph at Cheltenham.

14:30 – Banbridge

This is the best novice chase seen in a long time, and while most of the field hail from Closutton, the idea that their trainer knows where they ought to finish is wide of the mark. The pace will be strong, and that should bring the confirmed stamina of Banbridge into play, and he will appreciate getting back on decent ground after struggling through the mud in the Drinmore. The climb to the line here always finds short runners out, and while there may be quicker horses in the race, Banbridge is a most assured jumper who should gallop through the line.

15:05 – Stattler

Another hot favourite who should win in the shape of Galopin des Champs, but I’m not 100% convinced that he will be as good at 3m as he is at shorter, and any chinks in his stamina will be exposed by Stattler, who doesn’t have a great deal to find on their novice form, and who looks to have progressed again given how well he travelled at Tramore on New Year’s Day when a rather luckless second to Minella Indo. He makes each-way appeal even with seven runners.

15:40 – Lucky Max

Just a token selection for the well-handicapped Lucky Max, who might have won at Navan last time if held on to for longer, and looks capable of winning a good handicap hurdle from his current mark. The worry is that three miles is unknown territory, and he would have made more appeal at the intermediate trip. I couldn’t put anyone off Maxxum, who looks a deserved favourite and has the excellent Cian Quirke taking 7lb off his back.

16:10 – Fils DOudairies

Fils D’Oudairies is a tentative pick in a race lacking a standout runner. The 8-y-o lost his confidence over fences as a novice, and has largely been kept to hurdles since, but he jumped fine when a close fifth on his only chase start for Gordon Elliott at Killarney, and he was an unlucky second over this trip at Listowel when last seen. He’s on a good mark if his confidence has been restored.

16:40 – Special Cadeau

I’d love to see Fascile Mode prove himself the star he looked on debut here for Tom Mullins and family, but I think the bet is an each-way stab at Special Cadeau, who was conceding 11lb to the favourite when they met over Christmas, but now meets him at levels. He was bred by Pam Sly out of her 1000 Guineas winner Speciosa and won for Pam at Huntingdon before being sold to join Willie Mullins for a hefty sum. The run at Leopardstown saw him carry a penalty after a lengthy absence, and I think he should improve a little on it, giving him every chance on paper.
