Top weight PRAIRIE WOLF has yet to match his fairly useful bumper form over hurdles, but he ran well in first-time cheekpieces when runner-up to the improving El Muchacho (pair long way clear) here last month and a reproduction of that form could be good enough to see him go one better back up in trip in this weaker race. Secret Secret wasn’t seen to best effect after making a bad mistake at Wetherby last time and is potentially well treated now, while Turbulent Power has each-way claims if seeing out the longer trip.
Winning Irish pointer HOLD UP LA COLMINE has made the frame in all three of his starts over hurdles so far for Philip Hobbs, with the form of his Chepstow fourth on his debut behind the useful types Chianti Classico and Henri The Second working out well. He wasn’t beaten far when third at Lingfield last time, so he is taken to make the long journey up to North Yorkshire worthwhile. Bumper winner Swallows Song showed encouragement on his hurdles debut over course and distance last time and is feared most, ahead of Ballygeary who showed plenty when second on his debut in a bumper at Sedgefield last month.
DA VINCI HAND developed a good record at this course last season, winning twice and finishing second in his two other visits. Although beaten a long way over hurdles here last time, he’s taken to return to winning ways now back over fences in a lesser race. He can get the better of the in-form Trac, runner-up here last time after winning at Wetherby, while Follow Your Arrow, a winner at Hexham early in the season, could still have more to offer after just four runs over fences.
PRETENDING has much the best form of the three that have already run over hurdles in this juvenile for fillies and should have learnt plenty from her encouraging third at Doncaster behind the fairly useful pair Arclight and Greyval, both winners since, so she can open her account in this sphere. The consistent Never No Trouble has been placed in her last four starts, whilst Vision of Hope and Zestful, who both had fair form on the Flat, are interesting on their debuts over hurdles.
MUSE OF FIRE had a mixed record over fences previously but made an encouraging debut for Gary Hanmer at Warwick on New Year’s Eve having dropped a long way in the weights. Beaten only by subsequent winner Unit Sixtyfour and clear of the rest, he gets the nod off the same mark returned to novice company. Moore Clouds, Snowy Clouds and North Parade are potentially big threats, though all three are habitual front runners.

Just the four runners for this mares’ handicap chase. CREDO is on the up, having followed up a win at Chepstow from Flowing Cadenza with a good second to the same rival at Hereford last time when pulling clear of the remainder, and she should resume winning ways in this lesser contest. Gazette Bourgeoise is the main threat, having finished fourth at Cheltenham two starts back, ahead of Betty Baloo.
HARD IRON hasn’t looked back since being sent into handicaps, coming here after a couple of wins at Ayr in the autumn, and is fancied to complete his hat-trick now stepping up to staying distances for the first time. Last month’s course-and-distance scorer Bollin Neil should ensure the selection doesn’t have things all his own way, though, with the reliable Flexi Furlough the pick of the rest on her return.
