Horse Racing tips: A 9/1 play leads the way in Thursday’s Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park

Timeform reckon Gabbys Cross can build on last month's run and take the featured Thyestes Chase (14.50) at the Co Kilkenny track.

13:05 – Sixhandsinmypocket

SIXHANDSINMYPOCKET represents the same rider and trainer combination which took this corresponding race 12 months ago and he may be able to notch a first success. He produced a career-best effort on his handicap debut at Fairyhouse last month, closing all the way to the line despite being carried left on the run-in and he makes most appeal from 2 lb higher. After The Roar should be capable of better now handicapping so he’s feared most.

13:40 – Purse Price

Gordon Elliott holds a strong hand here and it is PURSE PRICE who is taken to come out on top. She has shown gradual improvement in four starts over hurdles so far, and she didn’t do much wrong when finishing third at Limerick last month, outpaced on the home turn but starting to rally after jumping the final flight, suggesting she’ll relish this step up in trip. There should be more to come from her and she can prove too strong for stablemate Ellis Boyd Redding, who will also appreciate this stiffer test.

14:15 – Teahupoo

TEAHUPOO is still only a six-year-old and he took his form to a new level when defeating Klassical Dream and Honeysuckle in the Hatton’s Grace at Fairyhouse at the beginning of December, relishing the step up in trip. He appears to have the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on his agenda and he can lay down his credentials here on what will be his first start at three miles. Longhouse Poet, who resumed winning ways last time, has his stamina assured, and can pose the biggest threat.

14:50 – Gabbys Cross

A typically competitive renewal of the Thyestes Handicap Chase and preference is for GABBYS CROSS, who caught the eye on his return from three months off in a big-field handicap at Leopardstown over Christmas. He was beaten just under four lengths but would have finished even closer had he not made a couple of late errors at his fences. He is fairly handicapped on that effort and he is entitled to come on for that effort, too. Punitive and Escaria Ten head the list of dangers in a race where you can make a case for several.

15:25 – Sir Gerhard

This race revolves around SIR GERHARD, who is making his eagerly anticipated debut over fences after suffering a setback earlier in the season. He was very smart as a novice over hurdles last season, notably winning the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last season. Sir Gerhard wasn’t at his best on his final start, but arrives with plenty of potential on chase debut (point winner) and will likely take plenty of beating with a clear round. Largy Debut is a threat if back to form and Indiana Jones isn’t one to dismiss.

15:55 – Emancipator

EMANCIPATOR gained his first win over hurdles at Fairyhouse when last seen in November and he was very impressive on that occasion. He was well supported and could hardly have won with anymore in hand, leading on the bride between the last two flights and easier clear on the run-in. A 14 lb higher mark demands more but he’ll take the beating if in the same form after a short break. Bluebell Diva, who ran well at Limerick a month ago, seems sure to launch another bold bid.

16:25 – Ankud

Not much form to go on here so the market could prove revealing, but ANKUD shaped well when runner-up on his debut at Naas and that effort sets the standard. He can go one better now with improvement on the cards, perhaps at the expense of stablemate Smokey Putnum, who is making his debut.
