Cheltenham Festival 2023 is eight weeks away and racing fans will be looking for a little bit of insight into every race, so we’ve got jump jockey icon turned tactical guru Ruby Walsh and top pundit Rory Delargy with us every week to hopefully get you clued in.
The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle kicks off proceedings on Wednesday March 15th as some of the best stayers battle it out.
Our dynamic duo will be doing weekly ante-post podcasts to deliver their early thoughts on every race – amazing, eh?
Is it Hermes Allen’s to lose as Paul Nicholls eyes another Cheltenham success? Or will Willie Mullins pull it off with one of Gaelic Warrior, Champ Kiely, Impaire Et Passe or Grangeclare West?
RORY DELARGY: Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle
Hermes Allen is at the top of the betting and he’s a course and distance winner for Paul Nicholls. He put on a good jumping display at Cheltenham and he backed that up at Newbury in the Challow Novices’ Hurdle. However, it’s worth noting that a Challow winner has never gone on to win the Ballymore.
Inthepocket looked very good for most of the race as Naas last time out and he edged out Three Card Brag, however, he could have been caught at the end. He was also impressive on his debut at Wexford before that. I like him a lot and he’s classy but he might be an Albert Bartlett horse.
Irish Point looked like he was going to eat into the lead in the Lawlor’s Of Naas but he faded behind Champ Kiely. He doesn’t look like he’s got a turn of foot but he’s more of a speed horse. He could be overpriced and you can’t knock his form.

Hermes Allen is probably the most solid at this stage as he’s definitely going to go there. He’s already set a good standard and he should improve again. He’s a good jumper and he doesn’t have to work on anything for the race. For now, it’s Hermes Allen but that could change as things develop over the next few weeks.
