STARSHIBA was kept busy by David O’Meara in 2022 but ended the year back in top form at Lingfield. He won twice there in December and went like the best horse when third behind Algheed on New Year’s Eve, still having plenty to do on the home turn after a slow start before finishing well. That was over seven furlongs and he looks the answer here back at a mile. Super Den deserves credit for his consistency and is second choice.

FREE SOLO dropped a long way in the weights last year for Jamie Osborne but came good with blinkers back on for his final start in 2022 when winning over this course and distance. He showed a good attitude when following up over a mile, also at Lingfield, at the start of the month and ran well when second here on Saturday. It would come as no surprise were he to defy a penalty at the second time of asking. Politics looks well worth a shot at seven furlongs and he’s a big threat, with Hul Ah Bah Loo also considered.
13:45 – Rabaah
Shadwell colt RABAAH has a fine pedigree, by Dubawi out of a half-sister to top-class sprinter Muhaarar, and while he has an absence since last May to overcome, that was a promising effort on his debut when faring best of the newcomers to finish third behind the subsequent July Stakes runner-up Show Respect in a maiden at Leicester. The Charles Hills-trained colt is marginally preferred to More Than A Grey who also contested a pretty warm contest when last seen. Of the rest, Al Muzn will know more this time and he’s a definite threat.
14:15 – Base Note
There are a few to consider in this mile and a half contest but BASE NOTE is a useful performer for Simon and Ed Crisford on the all-weather and ended 2022 firmly on the up once being fitted with a visor. His win at Wolverhampton at the beginning of December was his third success of the year, and he did well in the circumstances, after not being ideally placed, to run Scriptwriter to a head back there later in the month. He’s fancied to successfully concede weight all round while Capital Theory is on a roll and Oman is one to consider back on the level.
14:45 – Man on a Mission
MAN ON A MISSION has gained three of his four wins at Lingfield for the Charalambous/Clutterbuck yard and is thriving at present, following up a Wolverhampton win late last year with his latest course-and-distance success just three days later when going with plenty of zest. Turned out under a penalty again here, this looks a good opportunity for him to bring up a quick-fire hat-trick. Nordic Glory heads up the dangers with a recent outing sure to have blown away any cobwebs, while Yimou and Lilkian can fight out for third spot.

DOWNTOWN DUBAI was placed in three of his four all-weather nurseries last year but looked less than straightforward. However, a combination of the step up to a mile and a quarter along with a gelding operation could be just what’s required to enable Charlie Johnston’s charge to open his account. First-time cheekpieces may see Gilded Moon go close, so she heads up the opposition with a talented 5-lb claimer booked, while Al Ghanim is worth a market check on handicap debut too.
15:45 – Goldsmith
GOLDSMITH made his first start for Alice Haynes a winning one when successful over this course and distance last month, finding plenty late on to get up for a neck win over Sundayinmay. With that form proving strong – both the fourth and fifth won next time out – he looks capable of going in again following a small rise in the weights. Kardinya is a fellow last-time-out scorer who warrants respect, with One Step Beyond another to consider.
