13:00 Southwell – They Don’t Know

Following a two month break, that reliable veteran performer Star Shield was my first port of call here and he could be involved in this extended mile handicap off a very fair mark of 75, just a pound higher than for his last success.

He is obviously worth including in your combo forecast and tricasts for this competitive class five handicap, but may have to give best to Jason Watson’s mount. This column has always been about finding the value in a race and that is what this son of Vocalised could be given that he is drawn out in the car park in box number 14 which should see him well down the bookmakers’ lists.

Still, as a horse that has been ridden prominently in the past, I am pre empting that Jason will tuck him in from his outside stall which may help him to settle in behind runners for a change. The selection does stay further than this mile, so a fast run race would suit and with six placed efforts on his 14 starts under rules, now might be the time to catch him at a double figure price to lose that maiden tag.

Kildorrery is the enigma that keeps on giving or not as the case may be. There is no more of a definitive hold-up horse in training in Ireland than this 10-year-old and he has taken to some notable scalps in his 30-race chase career forming a reliable partnership with Shane O’Callaghan. The 10-year-old looks assured of getting the pace in the race he needs to show his best form here, but may have to give best to the prominent running selection. A more than useful novice hurdler, the top weight here hasn’t really fulfilled his potential since going chasing (a maiden after seven starts, placed in three), but this looks one of his easiest tasks to date and anything like a clear round could see him lose that maiden tag over the larger obstacles.

All eyes will be on Grangeclare West as he bids to follow in the footsteps of some top class novices in this Grade One Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle.

This lightly raced seven-year-old travelled well and jumped with great fluency when seeing off 22 rivals by 13 lengths and more in a maiden hurdle at Navan and was immediately installed favourite for the Albert Bartlett Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Bound to have come on for that run, only his second under rules, another step forward should see him in the mix for this significant event.

However, the flip side of that eye catching and hyped up performance by the media, is that the second and third have since been well beaten and he is sure to start at really cramped odds despite the fact that this looks a cracking renewal. Irish Point and Champ Kiely are also likely improvers, but I expect the Joseph O’Brien trained runner to reverse summer form with the latter here. Since that mid-summer defeat he has since gone on to win a maiden hurdle with ease before brushing aside the classy American Mike to the tune of eight lengths in the Grade Three Monksfield Novice Hurdle at Navan.

15:00 Southwell – Dark Trooper

Three-year-old handicaps at this early part of the year are always tough to analyse, but I thought this seven furlong event had a nice betting shape to it. Even at their tender age, several of these look relatively exposed with the exceptions being the top weight and Serenity Rose. The last named will be partnered by the hugely promising Billy Loughnane and his 7lbs allowance will count for plenty here after the filly ran a cracking race behind Resilient Power on her first attempt at seven furlongs at Wolverhampton last month.

She should be able to take another step forward and looks the biggest danger to the selection. The son of Dark Angel progressed nicely in his first season culminating in a promising three lengths fourth to Reward Smile at Windsor over six furlongs when plenty didn’t go his way including jockey Richard Kingscote dropped his whip at a crucial stage. This step back up to a seventh furlong looks a good move and he may be able to give the weight away all-round.
