Paul Nicholls’ charge Monmiral won a Grade 1 as a four-year-old tried to match it with the mighty Jonbon at Warwick. Even though he jumped really well he got beat comfortably but there no disgrace there as Jonbon won at Sandown easily the next time. Thunder Rock looked good in two wins over fences, winning at Ascot, and the handicapper has been impressed with his progress. He is now 15lbs higher than when winning at Uttoxeter on his first start over offences.

I think the ground is going to be very soft at Cheltenham with the rain that is forecast. War Lord got beat 11l when finishing fourth in The Arkle. He has some very smart form and it was a good run at Exeter behind Greaneteen in the Halden Gold Cup on ground that was unsuitably fast for him. Simply The Betts is another I like in here, he was 2nd in the race last year off a higher mark.

14:30 First Street

First Street might look like Nicky Henderson’s second string on paper but the only concern is the very soft ground. I really like him and there is more to come from this horse. Marie’s Rock will handle conditions but I feel she is better after a run. I Like To Move It finished just in front of my selection in The Betfair Hurdle and is a young, progressive horse.

David Maxwell couldn’t believe his luck when winning at Sandown last time when he beat Call Me Lord a whisker when the latter’s rider mistook the winning post. Dolphin Square won this race last year and is only 4lbs higher. Abuffalosoldier won on ITV at Newbury last time. It is a different ground though and that is the worry. I think Henry Daly will hope Bridge North bounces back from an uncharacteristic display at Sandown.
