12:00 – Lot of Joy
A big-field novice which can go the way of the Willie Mullins-trained LOT OF JOY, who was useful on the Flat and shaped with plenty of promise on her debut over hurdles at Cork last month. She was unable to land the odds, but showed plenty to work on, beaten only by a potentially smart type who has franked the form since. The step up in trip will also help her and she is well up to winning a race of this nature. Point winner Deep Cave was a promising second on her hurdle debut in November and may give the selection most to do.

UNANSWERED is proving very progressive, completing a cross-code four-timer earlier in the year and landing a big gamble in a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham last month. He relished the longer trip on that occasion and left the impression he is still some way ahead of the handicapper, so he is strongly fancied to go in a race which probably isn’t as competitive as the numbers suggest. West Is Awake shaped well on his reappearance and heads the dangers along with last month’s Limerick maiden winner Luimneach.
13:10 – Maxxum
Gordon Elliott is mob-handed in this big-field handicap and it could be MAXXUM who has the best claims. He was gambled on when runner-up on his debut for this yard at Punchestown in October, but he bumped into one on that occasion, and had no problem going one place better at Navan last time. That was a much-improved display and he had any amount in hand, so while a 17 lb rise in the weights may look excessive, it is fully justified, and he looks a big player in his follow-up bid. Gavin Cromwell’s Listowel second Perceval Legallois is another weighted to have a big say and next on the list ahead of course and distance winner Maze Runner.

13:45 – Flooring Porter
FLOORING PORTER was a bit below form when fourth to Home By The Lee, Bob Olinger and Ashdale Bob at Navan last month, but he left the impression he was in need of the run, and more importantly that he wasn’t best suited by the two and a half mile trip. A dual winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle, he’ll relish this return to three miles, and is strongly fancied to go one place better than in this race 12 months ago. Zanahiyr had excuses when down the field in the same race and is likely to be a bigger threat this time.
14:20 – A Plus Tard
A PLUS TARD proved himself the best staying chaser around when routing his opposition in the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival last season and he will be very hard to beat if in the same form here. Admittedly, he has to bounce back from his poor reappearance in the Betfair Chase, but his bloods weren’t right when checked afterwards and he is reportedly back to himself now. He can gain compensation for his narrow defeat in this Grade 1 last year. Gordon Elliott holds a strong hand, with Conflated and last year’s winner Galvin taken to cause the biggest threats
15:55 – I Am Maximus
I AM MAXIMUS was useful over hurdles for Nicky Henderson last season and he made a very encouraging debut for Willie Mullins when runner-up on his chase debut at Fairyhouse. He really ought to have made a winning start, too, an indifferent round of jumping ultimately costing him, but he will have likely learnt plenty for that initial experience and should prove hard to beat here. Grand Roi, who also can improve in the jumping department, may prove to be the biggest danger.
15:25 – Feronily
This looks cherry-ripe for a newcomer and, FERONILY, who was a good winner on his sole start in points, represents a yard that do very well in this sphere and he would be very interesting if the market speaks in his favour. No Time To Wait, another interesting recruit from points, and Ile Atlantique, must be respected also in a race where the betting may reveal plenty.
