I thought the race Enzo D’Airy won at the December meeting was a pretty strong contest. The first two came 15l clear in a slowly-run race looking ahead of their mark. Venetia Williams has a tremendous record in this race and I think ENZO D’AIRY will be hard to beat. He is clearly well suited by the track and jumped superbly the last day. He has form on heavy ground but doesn’t want it that deep. They’re not getting the worst of the rain so the going won’t be worse than soft. He looks very well weighted off 10st2lbs.
There’s not a huge amount on the ratings between BOOTHILL and Thunder Rock. Boothill’s handicap win at Ascot was stronger form and time will tell if his second by 8l to Jonbon in the Henry VIII is at least as good a run. He’ll be hard to beat here but I don’t think he wants really deep ground. If it turns into a mudbath that will be a concern but Kempton’s chase track doesn’t get as deep as the hurdles track. Aucunrisque is well suited by the track and he’s jumped well on two chase starts so he might be the biggest danger.
It looks a really interesting contest. You’ve got he likes of Comfort Zone, Perseus Way, Scriptwriter and Dixon Cover who all have achieved a similar useful level of ability. I’d probably favour PERSEUS WAY, who did very well on debut at Cheltenham to finish second and then had a confidence booster when bolting up at Leicester. He’ll be getting 5lb from Scriptwriter, who beat him at Cheltenham.
Last year’s winner BELLS OF PETERBORO is way down the handicap and normally competes at a slightly-lower level but gets in off 10st 6lbs. Tim Vaughan’s horses are also running really well at the moment. He’s very consistent and you might get a big price. He should reward each-way support.
EDWARDSTONE was a winner over course-and-distance last year and he came of age at Sandown in the Tingle Creek. He just wants proper jumping ground so it would be a marginal concern if it gets very deep. He doesn’t have much more to do and is by far the likeliest winner.

There’s a fair chance that THE GALLOPING BEAR really needs a test of stamina rather than just deep ground. You can’t deny he looks well treated here off the same mark as when winning the Grand National Trial, that’s the bonus of being disqualified.
One who doesn’t need deep ground and stays all day but would need a big price is CYCLOP, towards the bottom of the weights. He’s got a very good record in staying events around this time of year. The downside is he lacks the class of some of these. He’ll keep plugging on and I can see him finishing fourth or fifth so you get a return on your each-way investment.
