COLNAGO proved better than ever when filling the runner-up spot at Newcastle last month, benefiting from a positive ride back down in trip as he kept going well to be beaten just a head. He now makes the switch to nurseries and may have been let in lightly from a BHA mark of 75, particularly if the application of first-time cheekpieces can eke out a bit more improvement.
PRIMO made it two from two over this course and distance with an easy victory last month, ultimately landing the spoils by a length and a quarter having quickened to lead in the final 100 yards. Admittedly, he wasn’t in anything like the same form when meeting with his first defeat over course and distance on Friday, but that was a much deeper race. He is back in calmer waters today and should mount a bold bid to resume winning ways from what still looks a workable mark.
SELFISH BRIAN wasn’t beaten far on his latest outing at Wolverhampton, only tiring late on as he passed the post less than three lengths behind the winner. He is 1 lb lower in the weights here and the way he shaped last time suggests the drop back in trip will be in his favour. It’s still early days with the Nigel Tinkler yard (formerly trained by John Quinn) after just two starts and there should be a race like this in him now back in 0-55 company.
EASY EQUATION was below form at this course last time, but he was running consistently on the Flat earlier this year and is very much the type to bounce back quickly. It was only in October that he finally opened his account over this course and distance, just needing to be driven out late on to win by two and a quarter lengths. The manner of that victory suggests a 5 lb higher mark is unlikely to prove beyond him somewhere down the line, especially now back up in trip.
POCKET THE PACKET improved again to make it four wins from five starts in nurseries with a dominant performance at Lingfield last week, quickly asserting in the final furlong to land the spoils by a length and a quarter. He is clearly thriving at present, improving virtually by the run, and the 6 lb penalty he picked up for his latest success is unlikely to be enough to prevent him from going in again if continuing in the same rich vein of form.

BLIND BEGGAR returned to form with a good second at Naas in October, looking unlucky not to win having been short of room and forced to switch in the final furlong, ultimately losing out by just a head. He has joined Michael Appleby in the interim having been bought for 45,000 guineas later in October and there should be races to be won with him on the all-weather this winter. A BHA mark of 77 is certainly fair and the application of first-time cheekpieces could give him the extra edge he needs to end a losing run stretching back to May 2021.
POLITICS shaped with plenty of promise for new connections when filling the runner-up spot at Wolverhampton earlier this month, doing his best work late on to be beaten just a length. That was a big step back in the right direction and he remains dangerously well handicapped judged on the pick of his old form. For context, he lines up here from a BHA mark of 63 having been placed from a high of 81 around this time last year.
