Aintree 13:30 – Sam Brown

This may seem like a silly selection on the face of it but Dashel Drasher and Ahoy Señor both have a tendency to jump a little right. They may hamper each other and that could suit a hold-up horse. Sam Brown beat a competitive field by 15 lengths in an Aintree handicap at the Festival last April. He ran a very good race against Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall and that  just swings it for me. Ahoy Senor is very good around Aintree and if he does bounce to his best form will take a lot of beating.

The running of the race may not suit him. The reigning Grand National winner Noble Yeats added another string to his bow with a very comfortable win at Wexford last time.  Chantry House has had a wind operation, but lacks a little consistency.

Sandown 13:45 – Jonbon

I watched him jumping on Thursday morning at Nicky Henderson’s yard and he is superb.

His fast, accurate, jumping will be really suited to this track and I expect this son of Walk in the Park to enhance his reputation. Boothill is no mug and he looked really good when winning a competitive handicap at Ascot. He is no pushover.

Aintree 14:05 – Five Star Getaway [Each-Way]

I liked what I saw of Five Star Getaway who was fourth on his seasonal debut at Bangor. went back and watched this horse run at Bangor. The step up in trip will help as he was taken off his feet in the 2m 5f Topham Chase last season.

He won a competitive event at Kempton last December off a 2lbs lower mark and is definitely a player if he can get into a rhythm in the early part of the race. Recite A Prayer for Willie Mullins is a player and is weighted to beat stablemate Captain Kangaroo who won the Cork Grand National.

Sandown 14:20 – In The Air [each-way]

Gary Moore does really well at this track and this four-year-old is a big price. There are plenty of runners and his price makes him an each-way option. Love Envoi is a good mare but she can be very keen and this is her first run of the season. The step back in trip shouldn’t be a problem but there’s as many negatives as positives about her, particularly on the quicker ground. She looks well treated but I am happy with In the Air each way.

Aintree 14:40 – Riders On the Storm

This son of Scorpion did us a favour at the last meeting and he is only 2lbs higher than when beating Hitman, who won easily at Haydock afterwards and is fancied by many to run a big race in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day. The third that day,  GA Law went on to win the Paddy Power Chase at the November meeting at Cheltenham, so the form has a very strong look to it. Top weight Brave Seasca is smart and while a step up in trip should not be a problem, the lack of a recent run may just find him out.

Sandown 14:55 – Shishkin

It all went wrong for Shishkin in the Champion Chase. The signs were there from the minute he jumped off in the contest. I would rather remember him winning at Kempton beating Greanateen easily that day. Throw in the race with Energumene at Ascot and you start to remember how good this horse is. He does have to bounce back from the disappointment at Cheltenham and I hope that  episode hasn’t left a mark on him. He seems in very good form at home. Gentleman De Mee will be thrilling to watch.

His brakes don’t work that well so he will go a good gallop. I’m not convinced that this track is ideal for him. Greanateen won this race last year and it is a bit of a Sandown specialist. He has to be respected. Edwardstone did us a lot of favours last year when winning the Arkle Chase. He is another that will love the track and can’t be discounted. If real Shishkin turns up I fancy him to win.

Aintree 15:15 – Langar Dan

The sire of Langar Dan is Ocovango and the Skelton family have bought him to stand at their stud. That tells you how much they like this horse. He looked in need of his comeback run but he looked very good when winning here at the Festival, having tipped up at Cheltenham when well fancied for the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle.

Sandown 15:30 – Revels Hill

This seven-year-old ran very nicely against a progressive opponent over a trip well short of his best at Ascot last time. This London Handicap looks the perfect fit for Revels Hill.
