Mick Fitz TV picks
13:20 – Russian Ruler
13:55 – Stage Star
14:30 – Paint the Dream
15:05 – Champ
15:40 – Paddleyourowncanoe
13:20 Newbury – Russian Ruler
He was a little disappointing on the face of it last season but seeing him in action at Nicky Henderson’s gallops at home, he looks well after the summer break. This looks a perfect opportunity for him to get off the mark over hurdles. The Paul Nicholls-trained Stay Away. Fay was a £305,000 purchase at the sales and they’ll be hoping this Son of Shantou can do the business. I am sticking with Russian Ruler.

13:55 Newbury – Stage Star
He’s already won a Challow Hurdle at this track on decent ground so Friday’s conditions should be no bother to him. Stage Star has better form on a flat track like Newbury too. The opposition is headed by Beauport who won very nicely at Carlisle but could be better suited by softer ground, possibly over further. He has to give away a penalty and that could be costly.
Camprond blotted his copybook with a nervy jump at Exeter. He is another who is smart and he takes too chasing and will be a major player if he gets over the first few fences as they will be crucial for him.
14:30 Newbury – Paint The Dream
Beakstown’s run in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree when fourth entitles him to go close but his wins-to-runs ratio worries me, eve if he did get off the mark over fences at Ayr in April. So, Paint the Dream could be some value against him. He has won at this venue and wasn’t beaten far by Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby. He looks like he has needed his first two runs and should be spot on now. He is the value selection.

15:05 Newbury – Champ
What more can we say about Champ as this son of Kings Theatre has such an inconsistent profile and divides opinion. He is talented though as his RSA Chase win proved a couple of season’s ago and seems to run well fresh. This maybe the time to catch him and went very nicely in his preparation for this contest. Proschema is the obvious danger on the back of a good win at Wetherby.

15:45 Newbury – Paddleyourowncanoe
There was plenty of support for Dan Skelton’s charge at Cheltenham before he fell five out and Paddleyourowncanoe is well handicapped on some of his better form. He gets 16lbs off the likely market leader Shearer and this looks a good opportunity to bounce back to winning ways, Pileon is dangerously well handicapped on the best of his form but has to bounce back from a very disappointing run over fences at Exeter three weeks ago.
