This is the biggest day of jump racing in the Lambourn area and as always there’s a really good card. There’s some very competitive racing and my old boss, Nicky Henderson, very rarely leaves without a winner of two.
Newbury 13.20 – Cap Du Nord
Demachine was not beaten all that far in last year’s feature and the drop in trip is just what is required around this track. He was a good winner at Uttoxeter recently so has to be on the shortlist. Cap Du Nord is dangerous off his mark though and he gets the nod with Ellis Collier taking a further 7lbs off.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
Newcastle 13.35 – Malinello
Ben Pauling has his string in great form and Malinello has had a wind operation, but has to overcome at 686 day layoff. We have seen this trainer work his magic on horses like this in the past. It will be his first time over fences and this seven-year-old could be well handicapped still despite the long absence.
Newbury 13.55 – Porticello (each-way)
He is a Grade 1 winner at Chepstow and his trainer Gary Moore’s team is in flying form at the moment. Porticello is a very good each way in this competitive event and the step up in trip to 2m 4f is perfect. He’s prefer the ground to be a little softer. The likely favourite Walking On Air was a very good winner at Newbury last year before being pulled up at Aintree and could be well handicapped. Porticello is a solid alternative, however.
FANCY A CHANCE TO WIN £/€25K?
Newcastle 14.10 – Constitution Hill
Nicky Henderson’s runner is the highest-rated novice hurdle for decades and I want the stats and numbers guys to be proven right. Hopefully we will see a dominant performance from the super impressive Supreme Novice hurdle winner Constitution Hill on the way to what will hopefully be a Champion Hurdle showdown with the dual champion Honeysuckle at the Cheltenham Festival next March.
Newbury 14.30 – First Street
This could be a really good day for the Henderson camp and James Bowen is the beneficiary of Nico de Boinville going up to Newcastle to ride Constitution Hill, as he’s picked up some really good rides. First Street was placed in both the Betfair and County Hurdle and was fancied by many to upset stablemate Jonbon in the Grade One at Aintree, but finished fifth to his stablemate that day. Theatre Glory will love conditions and is the biggest threat to First Street.

Newbury 15.05 – Remastered
David Pipe’s charge Remastered won at Aintree over hurdles for this column and the wind operation seems to have walked the trick. He was still travelling well when coming down for out in this race last year and get to run off 4lb lower. The Irish challenger and Kerry National winner at Listowel, Busselton, is still only a five-year-old, but his CV is already impressive and was second in the Galway Blazers Handicap at the Summer Festival.
He will love the drier conditions. Corach Rambler was a game winner of the Ultima Chase from what looked an impossible position under an inspired ride from Derek Fox at the Cheltenham Festival. He beat several of today’s rivals in that contest but this drier ground may be a problem for his running style. If he makes mistakes, the pack will get away from him and connections have said they will walk the course beforehand to make sure it’s safe for him to run. There is no doubting his ability, but he will need a bit of luck.
Our Power deserves a mention for Sam Thomas. He was a good winner at Ascot and despite a 5lb rise in the handicap he will revel conditions. Last year’s runner-up Fiddlerontheroof has cheekpieces on for the first time and that should sharpen him up a bit. He is definitely an each-way player.
Newcastle 15.25 – Happygolucky (each-way)
Kim Bailey is another trainer who is enjoying a purple patch and this son of Jeremy also has a long layoff to overcome. But make no mistake, he is a contender. He was second at the Cheltenham Festival 2021 off 4lbs lower to Vintage Clouds and then backed that run up with a win at Aintree. L’Homme Presse is the star turn in this as England’s great Gold Cup hopeful but he has to give plenty of weight away on his first start this season. I hope we see him at his best and if we do – none of the others should beat him. I fell though that L’Homme Presse’s main target is further down the line.
Newbury 15.40 – Amarillo Sky
Amarillo Sky was a good winner at Cheltenham and is only 4lbs higher now. That mightn’t be enough to stop him recording another win. He’s the youngest in the field and should still be open to more improvement against some of his elders.
