It is hard to overlook the progressive Sure Touch but he is untried at this trip and up against some doughty stayers. Spike Jones (nap) maintained his improvement with a good Worcester third last month and his proven stamina earns him the vote.

12:45 – Eclairant Le Monde

The Churchill Lad holds obvious form claims but he hasn’t looked the easiest. Fiftyshadesaresdev wouldn’t have been beaten that far at Sedgefield but for unseating and has a shout if staying but Eclairant Le Monde, who showed improvement to finish fourth in that race, can take another step forward.

13:20 – Spot on Soph

Relkadam is likely to do much better now back at this track but similar sentiments apply to Spot on Soph, who is at her best here and still looks on a fair mark. Snowy Clouds did what he had to on his chasing debut and is the chief threat.

13:55 – Masked Crusader

Plenty of these like to make the running but it’s still hard to look beyond Masked Crusader on his chasing debut. He struggled to land short odds when last seen but his previous win is good form. Fellow chasing debutant Midnight Centurion is next best.

14:30 – Ballyporeen

Hurdling newcomer Imperial Merlin is tempting, given his pedigree and bumper ability. Cartonne could do with learning to settle and Ballyporeen, unlucky when narrowly defeated at Wetherby two starts ago, is taken to open his account.

15:05 – Potters Legend

Ladronne (second choice) should go close in his bid to complete a double while Morozov Cocktail is only a 6yo and may well build on last season’s decent first chasing campaign. Potters Legend showed enough at Aintree to indicate he still has what it takes to win and this is a drop in class.
