An interesting race in which the vote goes to YGGDRASIL, who is 3-5 over fences and could resume his progress on this step back up in trip. Five Star Getaway looks interesting dropped back in grade on his return, while the others on the shortlist are Crack Du Ninian and the chase debutant Garincha.
With several likely to want a piece of the lead, including at least some of those dropped significantly in trip, this could be fast and furious. Found On (next best) sets the chasing standard and could settle the pace battle simply by dint of her usually fine jumping, but if anything is likely to profit from a pace collapse it could be FAITHDU VAL, whose Sligo chase debut success when sitting just off the speed was career-best form. Voice Of Calm (if jumping better) and Her Indoors (from a yard with a great record in the race) are of interest also.

There’s a good chance we are yet to see the best of low-mileage 8yo ASK ME EARLY, who looked a very promising novice chaser on slow ground two seasons ago and added two novice hurdles to his tally during a light campaign last season. He gets the nod ahead of Grumpy Charley, who lost his way a bit towards the end of last season but is another who still has potential. Fuji Flight is next on the list.
Winning hurdles prowess at 3 courses through OUR FOLLET’s immediate family and he is taken to make a winning debut. Javert Allen, from the close family of an even classier individual in Eldorado Allen, may appreciate a bit more time but rates the obvious danger even so.
Cases can be made for the majority of these, including last year’s winner Hunters Call and the unbeaten mare Lady Adare, while it will be interesting to see how the Irish-trained 4yo Minella Youngy goes in the betting. Last-time-out winners Flash The Steel, Homme Public and Bon Retour can also be considered but top of the list is NAYATI (nap), who has been staying on strongly over 2m since returning from a long absence and could relish this step back up in trip. Homme Public is second choice for an in-form team.
A lot could depend on which seasonal debutant out of Ivar (second choice), Riskintheground and RAMO is the most forward following their layoffs, and with fitness after an absence seldom a concern for one from his new stable, the last named is given marginal preference. Better can be expected from Ingennio and Maid Of the Night now that they are encountering hurdles.

This looks an absolutely cracking novice hurdle. There’s been a lot to like about the way in which Maximilian has knuckled down to win all four of his races, while Broadway Boy made an eyecatching racecourse debut last month and Merveillo is a useful recruit from the Flat. However, Maximillian has to give 6lb to four rivals who bring markedly superior form anyway from their exploits last season over fences. It’s not easy to choose from that group, including as this race may largely be a stepping stone before they revert to chasing, but preference is for the 5yo SAINT PALAIS ahead of Dr Kananga, with Fortescue and Keep Wondering also highly respected.
