12:50 – The Cob
THE COB ended last season totally out of sorts, but he is starting to look well treated judged on the pick of his form, lining up here from a 7 lb lower mark than when filling the runner-up spot at this course in December. It could be that fresh is the best time to catch him and it’s worth pointing out that the Ben Pauling yard has been in much better form this season than it was last time around.

13:25 – Git Maker
GIT MAKER won three of his four starts over hurdles last season, showing an excellent attitude when last seen defying a double penalty in a novice at Newcastle in April. He now makes the switch to chasing and his background in points suggests he should take well to this discipline. A BHA mark of 124 also looks workable judged on the pick of his efforts over the smaller obstacles.
14:00 – Matterhorn
MATTERHORN showed plenty of ability when making his hurdling debut in a listed event at Auteuil back in April 2021, passing the post 11 lengths behind the winner but leaving the impression he would have finished much closer but for an awkward landing at the last. He has since joined Paul Nicholls, who often does well with French recruits, and there should be lots more to come from him in novice hurdles this season.
14:35 – Fantastikas
FANTASTIKAS developed into a useful chaser last season for Nigel Twiston-Davies, putting up his best effort when winning a valuable novice event at Lingfield in January. Admittedly, he failed to better that form in two subsequent starts in big-field handicaps, but this looks a good opportunity for him to resume his progress on his first start for seven months. He gets weight from his two main rivals and three miles at this track should be right up his street.
15:05 – Gipsy De Choisel
GIPSY DE CHOISEL showed improved form to get off the mark for Nicky Henderson when last seen at Warwick in April, making all to win by four and three-quarter lengths in comfortable fashion. Still relatively lightly raced, he may yet have more to offer for his top yard and a 6 lb rise in the weights possibly won’t be enough to prevent him from following up on his return to action.
15:35 – Lostintranslation
LOSTINTRANSLATION won a Grade 2 at Ascot around this time last year, but his season went off the rails after that and he was last seen being pulled up in the Grand National at Aintree. However, he has fallen to a handy mark again and his first start of the campaign is probably the best time to catch him for the in-form Joe Tizzard stable (eight winners in the last 14 days).

16:05 – School Days Over
SCHOOL DAYS OVER looked a smashing prospect when making a successful Rules debut in a bumper at Market Rasen in May, only winning by a head but looking value for extra having been caught further back than ideal in a steadily-run race. The way he picked up in the straight was most impressive and his scope for more improvement suggests he could be up to defying a penalty.
