WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
12:40 – BATTLING BESSIE
Deeply Superficial makes her belated rules debut for Gordon Elliott having secured an impressive point-to-point win at Lingstown for Matt O’Connor last December. The daughter of Flemensfirth changed hands for £385,000 and saw off subsequent dual winner Mulllenbeg by 10-lengths on that occasion. However, BATTLING BESSIE gets the vote for Peter Fahey having done extremely well in bumpers last season. She showed plenty of consistency and produced excellent runs behind The Model Kingdom, American Mike and Lily Du Berlais and can land the opening maiden hurdle.
Law Ella was second to Ashroe Diamond in a nice race at Aintree back in April with Willie Mullins’ runner previously behind our selection when fourth at the Dublin Racing Festival. Elsewhere, it will be interesting to see how Franno gets on over hurdles for Gerry Keane with Little Flour and Tullig Wood two others who might have each-way aspirations if something goes astray with the leading contenders.
13:00 – INTHEPOCKET
Gitche Gumee was an impressive winner over hurdles for JP McManus at Stratford on Thursday and INTHEPOCKET can land the Wexford opener and be another nice novice hurdler for the leading owner. The son of Blue Bresil is having a first run under rules having been purchased for £290,0000 following his point-to-point victory at Moig South last November. He’s now under the care of Henry de Bromhead who knows what it takes to win this race having landed the prize with Dancing On My Own and Champagne Gold in 2019 and 2020.
Joyeux Machin is the horse to beat on form following his second-place finish to Facile Vega at Leopardstown last Christmas and returns here having disappointed in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham and at Punchestown earlier this year. The Mediator, Ahead Of The Posse and Transmission are the likely others to battle for the places, but InThePocket can see off Paul Nolan’s horse to score on his rules debut.

13:50 – MICA MALPIC
There was plenty to like about MICA MALPIC’S victory at Listowel last month with Enda Bolger’s runner set to improve further to land this extended 2-mile 6-furlong Handicap Chase. The son of Hunter’s Light is improving rapidly over fences having previously scored at Limerick back in May. He’s only a five-year-old and can defy an eight-pound rise in the ratings and previously showed his liking for soft with victory at Compiegne in 2020.
Farceur Du Large is the best horse on officially ratings and returns for Noel Meade following victory at Fairyhouse back in January. It would be some performance if scoring after that length of absence and is perhaps best watched on this occasion. Deadheat steps back-up in trip which is a positive and can challenge with Kieran Callaghan taking off a valuable 7Ibs. Elsewhere, former course and distance winner It Could Be You along with Kavanaghs Corner and Stormey are also on the shortlist.
14:55 – FAVOURITE MOON (NEXT BEST)
FAVOURITE MOON has the fitness edge over Jack In The Box and that will be the difference for Bill Durkan’s runner to land this extended 2-mile 4-furlong Novice Hurdle. The son of Sea The Moon will appreciate the underfoot conditions and has shown good consistency under both codes. He ran nice races in competitive handicaps on the level for William Haggas before taken a little time to find his way for new connections this year.
He ran a creditable sixth behind Echoes In Rain in the Connacht Hotel Qualified Riders Handicap here at the Festival during the summer before claiming his maiden hurdle in comfortable fashion at Down Royal. I’d forgive his poor run in the Ceasarewitch at Newmarket with his fitness in recent months a clear positive. Jack In The Box is the biggest danger and returns having finally landing his maiden hurdle for Gordon Elliott at Naas back in March – he can chase home our selection.
15:30 – AFFORDALE FURY (NAP)
AFFORDALE FURY brings previous Galway form to the table and can land this 2-mile 6-furlong Maiden Hurdle for Noel Meade and Bryan Cooper. The son of Affinisea won a bumper here on his rules debut earlier this month with connections returning quickly in an attempt to remain unbeaten and securing maiden hurdle success. He’ll appreciate the step-up in trip having won a point-to-point at Ballycahane back in March and could develop into a nice novice hurdler this season.
Sam’s Choice looks the main danger with Gordon Elliott applying blinkers for the first time following several placed efforts, four of which were second from six starts over hurdles. Monbeg Park is another on the shortlist for Sean Doyle with Mark Walsh taking the ride on the son of Walk In The Park. He’s another previous point-to-point winner and should enjoy the longer trip following his latest run at Punchestown back in April.
