Horse Racing tips: Rory Delargy’s Ascot & Wetherby picks on Saturday

Rory reckons Anyharminasking (Ascot 14:05) is well ahead of the handicapper.

Ascot 13:30 – Goshen

Goshen has been called all the names under the sun, but although hard to steer when going left-handed, he is just about the best hurdler in the country this way round, and I see no reason why he won’t take to fences. He is conceding weight all round, but all three rivals are out of the handicap proper.

Wetherby 13:50 – Autumn Return

Autumn Return won the latter of her completed starts in points before landing her only start in bumpers for Ruth Jefferson. She impressed with how she travelled and jumped when winning on hurdles debut at Market Rasen, and that form is working out. She is opposed by some interesting newcomers here, but sets a decent standard and will appreciate the step up in trip.

    Ascot 14:05 – Anyharminasking

Plenty of these can be viewed positively, but none more so than Anyharminasking, who is the only horse to have beaten Constitution Hill (in a point). Despite that notable scalp, he was given a lenient opening mark, and bolted up in two handicap starts in the spring. He has plenty more to offer for last year’s successful stable, and the handicapper is a fair way from catching him up.

Wetherby 14:25 – Nina The Terrier

She has a bit to find on the numbers, but fitness is an asset for Nina The Terrier, whose second-place finishes in handicaps at Newbury and Chepstow should not be underestimated. She conceded first run to Sonigino at Chepstow, and that horse won again by a wide margin there on Wednesday, suggesting the form was much stronger than considered at the time, and making her look value against Molly Olly’s Wishes.

    Ascot 14:40 – Monsieur Lecoq

Monsieur LeCoq was unlucky not to win this race last year, idling after being left clear at the last and caught in the dying strides. He shaped as if needing the run over hurdles at Chepstow last time, and looks to have been laid out for this. He makes plenty of appeal off a 2lb lower mark than 12 months ago.

    Wetherby 15:00 – Oscar Elite

I just favour 2021 winner Indefatigable of the market leaders here, and she again warmed up with a run on the Flat at Pontefract, but none of those at the head of affairs are bombproof, and I’m happy to take a flier on Oscar Elite, who was beset by breathing/bleeding issues over fences last term, but who has had wind surgery and might be best caught fresh on his return to hurdles. He was placed in G1 novices at Cheltenham and Aintree over this trip, and could have more to offer over timber.

    Ascot 15:15 – Annsam

Annsam gets the nod here off what looks a lenient mark. He was an impressive winner over C&D last December, beating subsequent winner Phoenix Way by 4½ lengths. A bad mistake at the second did for his chances in the Coral Trophy at Kempton next time, and he was back over hurdles subsequently, winning at Newbury on his final start. He has won two and finished second once in three completed chase starts, and while prone to an occasional mistake, looked well suited by this track when winning.

    Wetherby 15:35 – Bravemansgame

A watching rather than betting race for me, largely as I’m a big fan of Ahoy Senor, and suspect he will be vulnerable first time up against a horse in Bravemansgame who has a tremendous record when fresh. Hopefully this will prove a race to savour.
