Horse Racing tips: Mick Fitzgerald’s best Saturday bets for Ascot & Wetherby

The jumps season is revving up a gear and Mick Fitz is getting jiggy for the tellybox action.

13:30 Ascot – Goshen

I went back and watched him win at Wincanton again because I really wanted to take Goshen on in the market. Having watched that race again I now think it’s going to be nice and simple for him. He can pop along in a small field, unhurried and his class should  see him  through.

The others are no mugs and the fact that it’s a handicap gives them a chance. Samarrive  for Paul Nicholls is a big horse who could be better over fences. Gowel Road is better than he showed  at Perth and he will be fitter and sharper for that run. Cobblers Dream always looks like he needs a run to set him straight.

13:50 Wetherby – Joe Dadancer

Ben Pauling has made a really good start to the new jumps season and this son of Caliphate is owned by the Megsons. His point-to-point form looks pretty promising (although he fell when well clear) so Joe Dadancer has to be respected for a team going well.

14:05 Ascot – Broomfield Bug

This is his second run after a wind operation and he didn’t have the smoothest of runs at Chepstow last time. I’m willing to give Broomfield Burg another chance especially over this 2m trip. He finished seventh in the Betfair Hurdle last season and runs off a 4lbs lower mark now.

Anyharminasking is the only horse to beat Constitution Hill when winning his point to point but took a little while to find his feet in the UK. He could be better than his mark. Hacker Des Places is solid and will give each-way punters a run for their money.

14:40 Ascot – Diego du Charmil [each-way]

Before Midnight gave a jumping display at Cheltenham first time out last season and if he is in that sort of form, they won’t beat him. Diego du Charmil looks very well handicapped especially with Freddie Gingell takes 10lbs off.

He’s a course and distance winner and has some very good runs to his name at this track. He was fifth, beaten seven lengths by Before Midnight last November but is 13lbs better at the weights now.

15:00 Wetherby – Sporting John

He showed a real return to form when winning a nice handicap at the Paddy Power meeting at Cheltenham last November and also won the Pertemps qualifier at Warwick. The ground isn’t an issue with Sporting John and he appears a lot happier over hurdles than fences. This looks a good fit for Sporting John to get his season up and running again.

I toyed with the idea of former Festival winner Indefatigable. She ran okay on the Flat recently at Pontefract and if she gets too big a price in the market I might have a little saver each-way on her.

15:15 Ascot – Tea Clipper

I was all over Tea Clipper at Chepstow a few backs but he was narrowly beaten by Peregrine Run. I still feel he is not badly treated and I’m willing to give him another try as early in the season is the best time to catch him.

Major Dundee was third in the Scottish Grand National when last seen and looks a danger.

15:35 Wetherby – Bravemansgame

The Charlie Hall Chase is a cracking contest and I favour Bravemansgame who seems to produce his best on a flat track. The trip is fine for him and the early part of the season is when he seems to excel. He gets the nod to sprint away from them late on

However, there is nothing between him and Ahoy Senor on ratings (both are 161) and Lucinda Russel’s runner was a very good winner of the Towton Novices Chase over course and distance last season, beating subsequent Grand National winner, Noble Yeats.

I fear the ground might not be soft enough to see him as his very best just yet though.

Eldorado Allen is the potential party pooper and he was exactly that when  winning the Denman Chase at Newbury earlier this year on his first try over three miles.

He enjoyed it that day as he did when winning the Holden Gold Cup first time out last season and is no back number. However, he has to give weight away to two very smart horses and that may cost him.
