The form is not of a daunting standard, so newcomers such as Physique, Vasilissa and Icy Dip need a very close look. MANY RIVERS showed up surprisingly well here five weeks ago on his debut and receives the vote ahead of Spirit Of Breeze who did the same in June, but others such as Verdansk and Novus must also be seriously considered.
Three of the main form contenders are similarly appealing and hard to split. The marginal vote goes to RAJASTHAN, who is well bred and looks sure to build on his Yarmouth promise. Chepstow scorer Promoter is second choice, narrowly ahead of Mudskipper. Promoter’s stablemate Paisano needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort. Ascari, Graham and Scintillante are interesting types among the newcomers (check the market signals to complete that picture).
This has a very similar shape to the first division, with not much separating the main form players and some of the newcomers looking potentially above average. Again the vote goes to a Gosden runner, namely well-bred debutant TORITO who will be all the more interesting if the market speaks in his favour. Davideo and Mr Mistoffelees are other noteworthy newcomers. Bloomwithgrace, narrowly, is first choice among the runners with experience, ahead of It’s All About You, Moush and Goodfella. Supreme King possibly isn’t crying out for 1m but he holds every chance if he stays.
PICK 5 SATURDAY WINNERS AND 100 GRAND COULD BE YOURS
This looks competitive but MISTY DANCER (nap) perhaps brings the clearest potential, as she is the most lightly raced in the field, has won her last two starts and still looked capable of better on her handicap debut last time. Miss Down Under is also on a hat-trick and she’s feared most, given how well equipped she looks if this turns into something of a slog in the mud. Picual and Smiling Jayne are next on the list but cases can be made for others too.
This galloping track could see the sizeable Beny Nahar Road (second choice) in a better light and he should appreciate the greater test of stamina. Frantastic faces lesser opposition than last time and isn’t fully exposed but this may go the way of JUAN BERMUDEZ. A winner on soft ground last year, he ran in a hot Leicester novice when last seen in April and is open to plenty of improvement now handicapping. Money for the ex-French Caraghann would be interesting too.
The percentage call goes to BELL SHOT, who remains unbeaten in Newbury handicaps and gets the services of Frankie Dettori back here. Second choice is Mount Kosciuszko, who has solid claims in the retained blinkers. Progressive Biggles is third on the shortlist, narrowly ahead of Final Watch who ran well in this contest last year. Several others also have possibilities in an open and competitive event.
Gisburn (second choice) came good over C&D last October so must enter calculations on the back of his eyecatching York sixth, while Spanish Star and Twilight Heir need factoring in under penalties after recent victories at Goodwood and Windsor respectively. 2020 winner Punchbowl Flyer is another in the mix but the vote goes to Irish challenger LORD DUDLEY who hinted strongly at a revival when fifth at Gowran and can make a winning start for Peter Fahey.
Zikany and Tralee Hills are striking contenders following their first and second in the jump jockeys race at Goodwood and perhaps Tralee Hills can turn the tables if the ground is soft. It may, however, be worth taking a chance on MASTERDREAM, whose two runs over 1m6f this season contained promise for this longer trip. The return of the 2020 winner and very classy staying hurdler Main Fact catches the eye, while 1m5f Newbury winner Nawar also comes back from a long absence.
