Fergal O’Brien has won two of the last three editions of this race and has good claims again with Elham Valley who put a disappointing effort behind him when scoring at Newton Abbot in August. Elham Valley backed that up with a creditable second at Southwell last month and ought to go well again after another 2 lb rise in the weights. It’s also worth noting that Elham Valley ran well over this course and distance when third in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle in 2021.
This is a good-quality novice chase but the vote goes to the Gordon Elliott-trained Ash Tree Meadow who has enjoyed a productive summer over fences. Ash Tree Meadow completed a hat-trick when scoring at Killarney in July and backed that up with a creditable fourth in the Galway Plate. He ran to a similar level when runner-up in a Grade 3 chase at Tipperary a few weeks ago and this drop back in trip should not inconvenience him.

Music Drive showed ability in bumpers, winning at Naas before finishing a creditable eighth in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, and he made a successful start to his hurdling career at Galway. Music Drive was well on top at the finish of that 19-furlong maiden and, in excellent hands with Gordon Elliott, he is open to significant improvement.
Hang In There failed to meet expectations when only runner-up on his chasing debut at Newton Abbot but he has improved significantly on that effort and has won his last four starts over fences, the last three of them achieved by wide margins. Hang In There was a clumsy jumper of hurdles but he has been much better over fences and he looks on a handy mark for his handicap chase debut.
Onagatheringstorm failed to kick on after making a promising handicap debut here last season but it would be little surprise to see him bounce back after an eight-month break and a wind operation. Onagatheringstorm, who had won a maiden hurdle at Warwick and a novice hurdle at Aintree, found only the classy Sporting John too good in a three-mile handicap at this venue. He finished weakly when disappointing on his final two outings of the campaign, but he could be a different proposition following a wind operation and he is well treated on the pick of his form.

Bermeo has an inconsistent profile but he has the ability to make an impact if on a going day. Bermeo won this race two years ago but was pulled up when defending his crown 12 months ago. He also disappointed on his next couple of starts but he put those efforts behind him when landing a veterans’ chase at Newbury on his first outing for Harry Fry. He disappointed again at Fakenham a couple of weeks later on his final start of the campaign, but he may have benefited from a break and returns with Fry among the winners.
Twinjets may have been a fortunate winner of his sole start in an Irish point but he scored in decisive fashion on his debut under Rules at Hereford in April, justifying strong support with a 12-length success. Twinjets backed up that impressive display by defying a penalty at Haydock, looking a class apart as he quickened six and a half lengths clear in ready fashion, and he is a promising recruit to hurdling.
