Fox Journey comes from a good family – his unraced dam is closely related to Oaks and Irish Oaks winner Alexandrova – and he shaped with encouragement on debut at Newbury last month, making good headway into sixth. Fox Journey was slowly into stride, showing his inexperience, and his chance was also compromised by meeting some trouble in running, but he finished with a flourish once the penny dropped, doing some good work close home. He should improve with that promising effort under his belt.
It is interesting that King of Steel, a son of Wootton Bassett who cost $200,000 as a yearling, holds an entry in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy later this month. Trainer David Loughnane is capable of readying one first time and King of Steel catches the eye on debut.
Ashtanga produced a promising first effort when third at Salisbury a couple of weeks ago and she is entitled to improve for that experience. Ashtanga, a daughter of Nathaniel, is bred more for stamina than speed so it was encouraging that she showed so much to work with on debut. She should be suited by the softer ground here placing more of an emphasis on stamina.
Manuha was well backed on his nursery debut at Yarmouth in August but he had to settle for second after looking awkward under pressure. There were concerning elements to that performance, but, on the other hand, some encouragement can be taken that he was able to finish runner-up despite doing so much wrong. Manuha, an 80,000 guineas purchase whose dam is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Invincible Army, has been gelded since Yarmouth and he might still be capable of better.
Marhaba The Champ looked unlucky not to win when carried markedly left at Ripon in August, but things went more smoothly when he made a successful handicap debut at Hamilton a couple of weeks ago. Marhaba The Champ impressed with how he moved through that contest, looming up two furlongs out and soon drawing clear. He ultimately scored by two and a half lengths in ready style and a 6 lb rise in the weights should not be enough to stop this progressive, well-bred three-year-old from following up.
Betweenthesticks has had a busy campaign but he is thriving on his racing and he made it three wins from his last four starts when scoring at York on Friday. Betweenthesticks showed plenty of pace at York and he displayed a tough attitude to gamely hold on. He carries a penalty here but is clearly in fine fettle, is effective with cut in the ground and has struck up a good association with 7-lb claimer Rose Dawes who has been aboard the last twice.

Fantasy Master has a good record at Nottingham and he registered his third course win here a couple of weeks ago when scoring over six furlongs. Fantasy Master had slipped in the weights but he bounced back to his best here last time, registering a length-and-a-half success. He won’t have any issue dropping back in trip – most of his form is over five furlongs – and he ought to give another good account at this venue, despite going up 6 lb for his recent win.
Captain Corcoran snapped a long losing run when scoring at Southwell last week and the style of success suggests he can defy a 5 lb penalty here if in similar form. Captain Corcoran broke well at Southwell and was never seriously threatened as he raced with zest at the head of affairs before quickening clear to register a comfortable length-and-a-quarter victory. He remains well treated on his old form.
