Dewhurst Stakes runners

Aesop’s Fables

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 4

Ready winner of 6f Navan maiden and Futurity Stakes at the Curragh. Lost unbeaten record when 3 lengths fourth of 6 in National Stakes at the Curragh last month, though perhaps heavy ground wasn’t ideal. Trainer has won this 7 times so must be respected.

****

Chaldean

Trainer: Andrew Balding Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 5

Frankel colt who has progressed at a rate of knots, off the mark in a Newbury novice (7f) before handling rise in class with aplomb when taking Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York. Booked his place for this with an all-the-way win in Champagne at Doncaster and sure to go well again.

*****

Isaac Shelby

Trainer: Brian Meehan Jockey: Sean Levey Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 1

Did the job well when making a winning debut at Newbury (6.5f, good to soft) in May and built significantly on that form when game winner of 5-runner Superlative Stakes at Newmarket (7f, good to firm) 91 days ago. Needs to improve again but that’s entirely possible.

***

Marbaan

Trainer: Charlie Fellowes Jockey: Jamie Spencer Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 2

Oasis Dream colt who took a big step forward when completing hat-trick in Vintage Stakes at Goodwood (7f) by ½ length from Holloway Boy. Well held in National Stakes (7/1) at the Curragh (7f, heavy) since but was probably unsuited by conditions. Has bit to find with principals, however.

***

Naval Power

Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 6

Won all 4 starts, notably when running to a smart level in listed company at Ascot in July. Had no trouble defying penalty in similar event at Haydock since and rates a very smart prospect for yard that has won 2 of the last 3 renewals.

****

Nostrum

Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: Richard Kingscote Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 3

Kingman colt who is a grand type physically and built on the considerable promise of his winning debut when taking Group 3 over C&D 16 days ago despite still looking very much in need of experience. More to come and is an exciting prospect.

****

Royal Scotsman

Trainer: Paul & Oliver Cole Jockey: Jim Crowley Age: 2 Weight: 9st 3lbs Draw: 7

Gleneagles colt who improved again when landing Richmond Stakes at Goodwood in July. Disappointed in Gimcrack at York since, however, and others have more potential now. Up in trip.

Dewhurst Stakes tips

Timeform: CHALDEAN’s impressive win in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster is arguably the best piece of form on offer and, with the son of Frankel open to further improvement, he looks the value call up against exciting-prospect Nostrum, who has been all the rage in the betting this week. Aesop’s Fables and Naval Power are also big players in what looks a deep renewal.
